The iPhone has been called a magical product because of its success over the years. However, now the iPhone seems to have lost its attraction.

Apple recently announced its financial results for the company's first quarter of 2019, with a total income of $84.3 billion. It's the company's worst performance in about a decade. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, explained that the decline(下降) was mainly because of the weaker demand in China.

However, people believe that Apple itself is largely responsible for the decline. Gene Munster, from US research company, told CNN that "one- third of the issue" comes from the company's move to sharply increase the price of its entire new products. This has made people less willing to change to the latest iPhones. For example, iPhone Xs Max, one of the company's latest smartphones, costs $1,450 in the US before tax, and costs much more in other countries. Apple has also failed to introduce features that excite consumers in a forward-thinking technology market. The iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are being criticized for lack of any real notable new software features, reported CNBC.

Meanwhile, Apple also faces challenges from smartphone makers in China such as Huawei and Xiaomi, which have introduced less expensive but still quality smartphones. In 2018, Huawei introduced a triple-lens(三镜头) camera on its P20 Pro. The triple-lens camera is a popular feature that the iPhone lacks.

"In the past few years, the technology in Apple's phones has not had any big breakthroughs, while the technology in domestic(国内 ) phones has gotten better and better," Feng Yin, a 32-year-old engineer in China, told The New York Times. "The difference is getting smaller."

It's not just Chinese consumers that have developed belief in domestic smartphone brands. Gregory from Paris bought his eighth Huawei phone in 2018. He also successfully persuaded his 56-ycar-old aunt, Jankowski, to buy one. "I wasn't really worried about the fact that it was a Chinese brand," Jankowski told The New York Times about her Huawei phone. "We know that they make amazing technological products."

(1)、What's the reason for the sales fall of Apple according to Gene Munster?
A、The weaker demand in China. B、Expensive new products. C、Failing to introduce new features. D、The challenges from Huawei.
(2)、Which of the following statements is True according to the text?
A、Apple has lost its market in China. B、The technology in Huawei has gone beyond Apple. C、Many people complain that the iPhone updates too quickly. D、More consumers begin to believe in Chinese smartphone brands.
(3)、How does Jankowski feel about her Huawei phone?
A、Content. B、Curious. C、Worried. D、Disappointed.
(4)、What can be the best title for the text?
A、Markets Call for Reform. B、Is Huawei Taking Off. C、Price Determines Sales. D、Is Apple Losing its Appeal.

See a cellphone cover that you like on Taobao? Forget about placing an order, paying the bill online and waiting for days for it to be delivered to you. In the near future, you'll be able to get it in minutes just by hitting “print” on your computer.

You might find it hard to believe that you could actually “print” an object like you would a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it would work. Just as a traditional printer sprays ink onto paper line by line, modern 3D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.

Instead of ink, the materials the 3D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin(树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is—from a millimetre to less than the width of a hair—the smoother and finer the object will be.

This may sound like a completely new technology, but the truth is that 3D printing has been around since the late 1980s. Back then, it was barely affordable for most people, so few knew about it.

Last year, though, saw a big change in the 3D printing industry—printers became much cheaper. For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3D printer might have cost £20,000, while now they cost only about £1,000, according to the BBC.

Taken out of the factory and introduced to more diverse and common uses, 3D printing can create just about anything you can think of—flutes , bikinis, jewelry, aircraft parts and even human organs. In fact, scientists from Cornell University in New York have just made an artificial ear using a 3D printer, according to Science Daily. The fake ear looks and acts exactly like a natural one.

However, as 3D printing becomes more common, it may bring about certain problems—such as piracy. “Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3D printer, who will visit a retail  store again?” an expert in 3D printing told Forbes News. Even more frightening, what if anyone in the world could use a 3D printer to print out a fully functioning gun?

    I'm a 20-year-old boy,and the following is my story.

A month after I graduated from high school in August,2007,I was coming home from swim practice in the training centre of the city and was involved in a car accident.I was so seriously injured that I was in a coma for more than two months at Prince Georges Hospital.

I suffered a lot from the experience of dying eight times during my coma and I couldn't open my mouth to talk or to communicate when I eventually came around. At that time,it seemed that walking was never going to happen again due to all the extreme injuries.Just like my body,my dreams were completely destroyed. But I was not going to let my injuries stop me from realizing my dreams.

After receiving a total of 15 operations and 36 blood transfusions,I had to make every great effort to learn to talk, eat, walk, shower, and live on my own again. When I was out of hospital,I still had to Go to outpatient therapy in Waldorf,Maryland. After I spent a few months in a wheelchair,I took baby steps to walk on my own.It was a miracle that I was able to walk again, but I still wanted to prove that I could not only walk, but also run. When it came true,I wanted to get back into the pool again. After having a few lung tests,I was able to go in the pool a little bit each week. After a few months of swim training,I began my freshman year at St.Mary's College of Maryland and then became a proud member of the swim team.

By telling my story,I want to make a positive influence on the world.I am just trying to live every day to the fullest and inspire other people never to give up their dreams no matter how bad a situation is to them.I remember when I was still in my hospital bed,I would have my mom and dad push me round in my wheelchair to the other rooms to see the other patients and chat with them and their family members.I wanted to let them know that everything was going to be okay.Somehow, things would work out for the best.

In the latest romance-drama, Descendants of the Sun (《太阳的后裔》), a handsome soldier Yoo Shi-jin(柳时镇) (Song Joong-ki)(宋仲基) meets the pretty doctor Kang Mo-yeon(姜暮烟) (Song Hye-kyo)(宋慧乔) in a hospital, and he doesn't hesitate to hit on her.

The dialogue, which takes place early in the first episode(集), immediately indicates that this is no ordinary South Korean drama. There's no family feud (不睦), or love tangles, or guesses and misunderstandings. The 16-episode show is set in the fictional war-torn country of Uruk(乌鲁克). Song Joong-ki is the leader of a special warfare command unit, while Song Hye-kyo plays a doctor who works for a humanitarian medical organization. Both are sent in the midst of disaster and disease as part of their work with UN peacekeeping troops. Both know and show clearly what they want and what they hate.

But what stands out the most are Song's skills as a pick-up artist(撩妹技能).

Boldness and creativity are the key weapons in his arsenal. When Kang invites Yoo to drink wine with her, Yoo, who is not allowed to drink alcohol as a soldier, says, "There is a way." before kissing her. Forget about the "eighth-episode rule" . This kiss happens in the fourth.

Humor also does the trick. On their first date in a cinema, Yoo says, "This is the most exciting moment of my life. The moment I am with a beautiful woman before the theater lights go out." When Kang tries to give Yoo a hard time, Yoo jokes, "I mistook you for a beautiful woman because it's dark."

And actor Song Joong-ki, who just came back from two years of military service last May, makes sure he delivers his pick-up lines just right.

"In Deep Rooted Tree (《树大根深》) and The Innocent Man (《善良的男人》), he [Song Joong-ki] showed he had the steel to play fearless and heartless men — that he could be taken seriously as an actor, despite his pretty face. In Descendants, he hits the emotional core of every scene, whether he has to be bold and amorous, guarded and mysterious, or sad,"said critic Foong Woei Wan in The Straits Times.

Cell phones:Is there a cancer link?

Could your cell phone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.

Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there's a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病). Also there's a greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors. “It's apparent now that there's a real risk, ”said Carpenter.

But others believe these concerns are not justified. Dr Martha Linet, head of radiation epidemiology (流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don't support warning labels for cell phones, ”said Linet. “We don't have the evidence that there's much danger.”

Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness—so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cell phones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It's funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cell phone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don't suggest a strong link between cell phone use and cancer risk.

With the New Year weeks approaching, you're looking forward to watching the splendid fireworks shows that will welcome 2019 worldwide. Unfortunately, visually impaired and blind people can't experience this joyful celebration. That may change soon thanks to Feeling Fireworks, a fireworks experience invented by the Disney Research Lab in Switzerland.

To experience the show, users stand before a large flexible screen, place their hands at the base of the screen and move them around to feel the fireworks. Alternatively, their hands can be situated in the center of the screen, where the initial explosions happen, and then moved across to explore other fireworks.

As the fireworks begin to explode, five nozzles (喷嘴) at the back of the screen start to shoot water, creating movement of water imitating the show. One specializes in the "blooming flower effect", another reproduces the "crackle" effect, and the rest take care of rockets and explosions. A computer controls the timing, and Feeling Fireworks allows users to experience fireworks similar to those in the sky.

Paul Beardsley, who led the research team, says, "We want blind, visually impaired, and sighted people to all try Feeling Fireworks, and to have a shared and enjoyable memory of a fireworks evening." And the screen displaying the vivid images created by water makes it fun for everyone.

The low-cost technology is still in its early stage, with only a 66 percent success rate. However, the team plans to continue improving the experience and believes the day when everyone will be able to enjoy the thrill of fireworks shows is not far. When ready, Feeling Fireworks will initially be available only at the Disney theme parks, and then hopefully, at fireworks shows worldwide.
