I'm Linda. Last year, I studied abroad alone. I lived with a host family in Madrid, Spain. Neither of my Spanish parents knew how to speak English at all, so it was very difficult in the beginning. But as I was used to their way of life and to only speaking in Spanish, we became very close.

My host mom, Concha, was a famous cook and she owned a restaurant. I was very lucky to try different kinds of traditional Spanish meals. Since I studied abroad for half a year, I had enough time to travel. I traveled to Venice, Florence, Rome and Milan with a group of my friends for a week. While in Rome, we visited the Trevi Fountain (特莱维喷泉) . It is said that if you stand with your back to the fountain and throw a coin (硬币) in over your shoulder while making a wish, that wish will come true. My wish was to have a happy study abroad experience that I would never forget. I am glad that my wish has come true and I will do it again if I visit there next time.

阅读短文,将下列句子填入短文中,使短文意思完整。有一个选项多余。

    Rock climbing(攀岩)did not become a sport until in the late 19th century. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

While rock climbing may still be necessary for mountain climbing, most people just climb low mountains for fun.

If you have ever done rock climbing, you will know that it is not a very easy sport. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} What most people don't know is that rock climbing is one of the sports that depend on your body and mind(意志).

To climb successfully, one must use wonderful skills. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Another important rule is that your arms only hold you close to the rock face while your legs are pushing you up. The closer you are to the rock face, the easier it is to climb.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Once you start to learn how to climb, you'll find more fun. People who like games such as chess playing or problem—solving may love rock climbing, because they are nearly the same in the way of thinking. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Anyone who enjoys a difficult game and loves the outdoors should think of taking rock climbing as a new hobby.

A. One of the important rules is to always have three parts of your body on the rock face.

B. Rock climbing has a really long history.

C. But now it has become a popular outdoor activity.

D. For anyone who wants to get into beautiful shape, rock climbing is a fun and good way.

E. Rock climbing is a wonderful sport.

F. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing both need practice.

True or False (判断下列句子是否符合短文内容)

A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, "What happened?"

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is a danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language too. When a bee found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the other bees to go with it to find food.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音) when it is pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animals have—a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information and to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animal can do this. No animal has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all of them. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They're not really bad guests but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some Western countries it appears they are not nice guests. And Western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.

In China guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home there is always fruit on the table for me and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the West generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host's way of doing things is usual behaviour for a guest.

My wife's mother is a very kind elderly Chinese lady who doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly but I must realize that she must not do that. In most North America homes if you are a guest and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least you could ask "Is it OK if I smoke?" But don't be surprised if they say "No, you can't smoke." In our culture if you smoke in their home you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house they are not a rude guest.

Guests in China also have special habits. Some Western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So if you invite international guests to your home don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift.

In China you probably won't need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If Western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.
