牛津版(深圳·广州)九年级下学期Unit 2 Culture shock第3课时 Grammar分层作业

 阅读理解

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They're not really bad guests but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some Western countries it appears they are not nice guests. And Western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.

In China guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home there is always fruit on the table for me and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the West generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host's way of doing things is usual behaviour for a guest.

My wife's mother is a very kind elderly Chinese lady who doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly but I must realize that she must not do that. In most North America homes if you are a guest and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least you could ask "Is it OK if I smoke?" But don't be surprised if they say "No, you can't smoke." In our culture if you smoke in their home you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house they are not a rude guest.

Guests in China also have special habits. Some Western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So if you invite international guests to your home don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift.

In China you probably won't need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If Western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.

(1)、What do many foreigners think of Chinese hosts?
A、They're the best. B、They're the worst. C、They're the most natural. D、They're the most difficult.
(2)、What does the writer often feel when he enter a Chinese person's home?
A、He often feels odd. B、He often feels like a god. C、He often feels uncomfortable. D、He often feels like a Chinese himself.
(3)、What will the writer probably say if guests want to smoke in his house?
A、It's OK if you smoke here. B、Let's smoke together. C、Sorry, you can't smoke here. D、Smoking is a bad habit.
(4)、What is the meaning of the underlined phrase "adapt to" in the passage?
A、Think back to. B、Get used to. C、Look forward to. D、Keep close to.
(5)、 What is the main idea of this passage?
A、Foreigners should learn from Chinese. B、Hosts must do things in the guest's way. C、Western hosts are always nice to guests.          D、People should understand cultural difference.

Once upon a time, there lived a wise man. Everyone loved him. His son, however, was very lazy and did nothing all day.

The wise man was worried about his son's future. One day, he said to his son, "I want you to go to find some treasure(财宝). I have drawn a map to guide you." Then he handed his son a bag. Inside the bag were clothes, some food, a little money and the map.

The son set. Out on his. Long journey the next day. He had to travel across forests, rivers and mountains. Along the way, he met a-lot of people. Some helped him with food, and some with a place to live. He also met robbers(强盗) who tried to rob him but failed. He saw changing landscapes(风景) and experienced different kinds of weather.

Finally, after a long year, he reached the place of treasure. He spent two days looking and digging for the treasure, but found nothing.

Feeling sad, he headed back to his home. On his way back, he experienced the same changing landscapes and seasons. Sometimes, he would stop to enjoy the beauty of nature. He also learned to hunt and make meals. He had to fix(修补) his own clothes and the tent himself. He was now able to tell time by the sun and protect(保护) himself from wild animals. He met the same people who had helped him earlier. This time, he stayed and helped them in order to repay them.

When he reached home, he said sorry to his father for not finding the treasure.

"There wasn't any treasure in the very first place, my son," the father answered with a smile. "But I think you have found your life's true meaning."

It's possible to get ill at any time of the year, however, it seems that more people get sick in winter. So why does this happen?

The biggest reason is that the cold weather brings us indoors. Spending more time indoors can make us get close with others but it will be easier for us to catch a cold or flu(流感). Moreover, according to scientists, the virus(病毒) is protected(保护) by its own fatty coating(脂质外层), but this coating changes into liquid(液体) at higher temperatures(温度). So the virus is less able to travel in summer. In colder weather, the coating keeps complete(完整). That's why the virus will get into our body easily.

What's more, the air is drier in winter both indoors and outside. The dry air is good for the travel of viruses. Therefore, viruses can travel farther and stay in the air for longer. Besides, in winter, we often close our windows and doors to keep warm. Less fresh air indoors helps viruses live longer in a room.

What about other reasons? Cold weather may be bad to our body and immune systems(免疫系统). A study found that to lower the temperature inside the nose by 5℃ kills nearly 50% of its virus-fighting cells(抗病毒细胞).

In order to stop illnesses, here are some tips for you. We should do more outdoor exercise to keep our body strong. It's a good way to take a walk with your close friends and enjoy the fresher air in the park on weekends. Besides, washing our hands can often lower the travel of viruses.
