    Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can't remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn't with their memory. The problem is with how they study.

    To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized (有条理的). When you put away a book – or memory – you can't just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.

    How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

    More and more people like keeping pets, so pet hospitals are usually very busy. Kind persons who love animals are needed to provide help in busy pet hospitals. Those vets (兽医) will teach them how to take care of the pets.

    Scientists think that pets will probably be much smaller because people in the future will live in much smaller space. Scientists are now working on making very small farm animals. The same thing might be done to make small cats and dogs.

    It's said that one day you might own a panther (豹) as a pet. Some scientists believe that they might have to start turning wild animals into pets since this might be the only way to save them from dying out.

    What about buying a robot to be a pet? This may sound silly, buy it could become true. Robot dogs have been made to sell. They are like real dogs. These pets might become more and more popular in the future.

    Lots of people want pets while they are on holidays. A hotel in Minnesota has solved this problem. They lend cats to their guests. Many experts (专家) believe that this idea will become more and more popular. It is very possible that in the future you will be able to order a pet, as well as room service, at a hotel.

On our second day in China, we had already been asked to join the school for supper. Nervous and unsure of the food and table manners, we politely agreed. Coming to China, the thing I was most nervous about was the food, and now my first dining experience would be with the school staff. 

In Chinese culture the most important person sits facing the door. When plates of food started arriving, I wished I had practiced my chopstick skills before arriving in China. 

Chinese culture is all about being hospitable (好 客 的 ). This means ordering lots of food and encouraging you to keep eating. It also means drinking wine or tea. You'll never have an empty glass. 

It's polite to try everything, but if you know me, you would know l don't eat everything. Fresh fish? Sure, an entire fish on the plate staring at you while you pick at it. Not for me. Snails with their shell crushed and cooked into a meal?No thanks!The lung of a pig? I'll pass. It seems that the Chinese really eat everything!

The Chinese people are friendly. They want to learn about you and teach you about their culture. They like to ask questions, and it is polite to ask them many questions and keep the conversation going. 

Every day I'm pushed out of my comfort zone (舒 适 区 ). But for the most part, I discover something I really enjoy. The experience itself is quite amazing, I've learned a lot, yet there's still so much to learn. It surely is different from my culture and way of living, but being in their shoes and seeing life through their eyes has really helped me to understand. And I look forward to discovering more!

⑤What if astronauts miss their families? There is special communication equipment in the space station. Astronauts can have personal" sky- to- earth" calls with their families. Usually, the astronauts wear earphones. It not only helps them talk with each other, but also allows them to talk to the ground from any position(位置) .
