Ann：My hobby is reading．I can learn a lot from different kinds of books．But that's not the only reason why I like reading．The other reason is that there are many stories in books．I always lose myself in the wonderful world that books show me．So friends，why not join me in reading books?Let's have fun together．

    A girl named Mary was killed at around 6：20 p. m. on a rainy day. Somebody found her on a street and called the police. The next day, the police got four suspects(犯罪嫌疑人). The police asked them the same question, "What were you doing at around 6：20 p. m. yesterday？"

    Flowers have habits or ways of doing things, just as people have. Would you like to hear about some of these?

    There is one habit that almost all flowers have. They turn to the light. If plants are kept in a room, the flowers turn to the window. Some flowers shut up at night. It seems that they go to sleep. They open again in the morning. Tulips（郁金香）do this.

    One morning Lingling was looking at some tulips. When one of them opened, a bee flew out. He stayed too late last night, and so was shut up in the flower. He might be hard at work all day getting honey. He stopped to rest in the tulip, and was shut in when it closed. He had a fine bed that night. Lingling wondered if he slept any better than he would have slept in the hive（蜂巢）!

    Running two miles on the playground isn't a fun thing to do for most students. But students in Miss Brown's class at Mark Twain School in the USA gladly put on their running shoes. They wanted to raise money to help a dog in need.

    Miss Brown told her students about Peter, a dog who had a hard start in life. At less than a year old, Peter's owners found out that he was not healthy. Something was wrong with his body. Medicine could help but it was very expensive. For Peter to have a better life, he needed surgery (外科手术). But his owners couldn't afford that. Finally, they had to leave Peter at the animal hospital.

    "I love dogs and when I hear about Peter, I felt so sad for him," says student Tony.

    Miss Brown's class decided to hold a Jog-a-Thon to raise money for Peter's surgery.

    "At first I felt like the Jog-a-Thon was just to get us to exercise," says Mike "but then I wanted to help this dog."

    "I just wanted to make a difference in Peter's life," adds student Chance Wood.

    News of the Jog-a-Thon spread throughout the school. Before long, five other classes also took part in the event. "I started receiving money from all kinds of people in our school community," says Miss Brown. "We raised $3,180.64 in all."

    My friend Tom is a good student. He is 14 years old. He is 1.53 metres tall. I am a bit short. I'm only 1.45 metres tall. Tom is a good football player. We likes playing football after school. Tom has two long legs and two big feet. His arms are long. His favorite colour is blue. Gina is Tom's sister. She is only 1 year old. She is 0.72 metres tall. She looks beautiful. She has two big eyes and a small mouth. Her favorite colour is pink. Look! She is wearing a pink dress.

    Teachers help us to become good students. So we need to say thanks to them for all their hard work. Chinese students have a Teachers' Day on September 10.But how do American students thank their teachers?

    First of all, American schools have a whole week in May to appreciate(感激)their teachers! Teacher Appreciation Day is on the Tuesday of that week.

    The school hosts parties with gifts and snacks that week. There are also signs everywhere to show their love for teachers.

    American students like to give small presents to their teachers. American teachers sometimes get thank you notes from their students. Teachers also have handicrafts(手工艺品), small treats, or trinkets (小饰物)from students.

    Students shouldn't just wait for Teacher Appreciation Day. Thank your teachers all the time! It helps them do a good job.
