The power of nature

There are some things in nature that we cannot stop from happening. We cannot stop the power of nature. A flood comes when there is too much water on the land. Sometimes, it is after a big storm when too much rain falls on the land. Sometimes it is after a big storm at sea, when too much sea water comes onto the land. The fast flood water can hurt us and can hurt our homes. We cannot stop a flood from coming, but we can try to stop the water from coming into our homes. We can try to stop the water by making a wall. We can use sandbags to make the wall.

An earthquake comes when the land moves. The land goes up and down and in different directions. Then land can crack(断裂). An earthquake can hurt us. We can get hurt by things that fall down in an earthquake. Falling things can start fires. We cannot stop an earthquake from coming, but we can try to make our homes strong so that they will not fall down in an earthquake.

A tornado(龙卷风)is fast air that goes around and around over the land. A tornado can pick up anything. It can break anything that is in the way. A hurricane(飓风)is a big storm with fast winds and strong rain. It begins at the sea and can come onto the land. Its fast winds can hurt us and our homes.     At East China University of Science and Technology, students who finish their food in the campus canteen get a coupon (优惠券) when they return their trays(托盘). Students can collect coupons and exchange them for small gifts, such as books, magazines and mobile phone covers.

“It has been such a surprise,” said Liang Zhaoyun, 19, a student in this university. “It has given us one more motivation (动机)to finish our food.”

“The aim of the activity is not only to encourage students to finish their food. We hope it can also motivate students to choose a more environment-friendly and healthier lifestyle,” said Tao Siliang, a teacher of this university.

But some canteen food is poorly prepared, meaning that students are not willing to finish it all.

“Generally speaking, the dishes in our canteen are all right,  ①  .Most students are the only child in their family and aren't used to some of the dishes,” said Wang Guangji, a leader of this university.

What if you really can't finish all your food? The canteen provides a take-away service. “If you can't finish all your food,  ②  .Even if you feed the cat, it's not wasted,” said Zhou Zeyong, another student of this university.

“I'm glad that we've reduced waste since starting the campus ‘eat-up' activity. But if we  ③  students not to waste food, we should also improve the meals in campus canteens,” said Wang.

I always knew that I depended way too much on my phone, but I didn't know how much. So I decided to do this challenge(挑战) to find out.

Every morning since I got a smartphone, I've used The Weather Channel App to find out what to wear. On the first morning I had to dress without guidance, but thankfully I was able to guess that the day would be cold and foggy by looking out of my window.

I couldn't tell what time it was. I haven't worn a watch for more than a year, because my phone showed the time. So I was late for picking up friends who had been on the bus for two hours from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes. I was also late for my part-time job. And even worse, I couldn't call people to tell them that I was running late.

Getting to places was harder, too. I got lost because I couldn't use the GPS(导航系统) on my phone. My driving, though, got a lot safer because I no longer had my phone in one hand checking directions while driving with the other.

But the number one trouble was not having my contact list (联络簿). I forgot to write down my friends' and family members' phone numbers before I started the challenge. It was sad to realize that I couldn't remember my brother's and my mom's cellphone numbers. Oh, how I wished to turn on the phone for just a second to look up phone numbers!

Even with all the problems, however, I found peace not worrying about missing a text message or an email.

This challenge was a great learning experience. It surprised me how I'd taken no notice of even the simplest things like remembering phone numbers. We all should take some time to think about how we can depend less on our cellphon
