How green are you? Do you care about protecting the environment and saving energy? We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you. Remember these three words: Reduce, reuse and recycle.
REDUCE
Reduce means “use less.” Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary— or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local produces if possible, and try not to buy too many things form abroad. It may cost a lot of money to bring them to us.
REUSE
Reuse means “use again.” Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
RECYCLE
Recycle means “change things into something else.” Although it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighbourhood and take part in recycling programmes. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

(1)、Why is it better to choose local products if possible?

A、Things from abroad do harm to our environment B、Local products are much cheaper C、To choose local products means that we love our country D、Things from abroad aren't necessary
(2)、According to the passage, when we find our clothes are out of fashion, what should we do?

A、Throw them away B、If they are still suitable, keep them C、Clean the floor with them D、Give them to others and buy new ones
(3)、What is the helpful activity in our daily life?

A、To shop with plastic bags B、To use paper cups C、To collect old newspapers D、To burn fallen leaves
(4)、According to the passage, which of the following is RIGHT?

A、We should learn to grow vegetables B、People mustn't produce waste any more C、Children are too young to do anything to save energy D、The simplest everyday activities are important to protect our world.
(5)、Which of the following is WRONG according to this passage?

A、Always buy new things and throw away old ones B、Use china cups instead of paper cups C、Recycle something that can be recycled D、Think first when we want to buy something
举一反三
Did you see snow in your hometown last winter? Did you feel it was warmer than before?
"There have been 21 warm winters in China since 1986," said scientists. They also said that in the past 100 years, as the global (全球的) temperatures went up by 0.74 ℃ , the temperature in North China has climbed 1.4 ℃ in only 50 years.
China needs to take quick action to cut carbon dioxide emission (排放) because it's the main reason for global warming. The good news is that China has seen the importance of going green. China set the goal of cutting energy use by 20% and pollution emission by 10% in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
Can you slow down global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps to cut the amount of carbon dioxide that is sent out into the air.
Here are some pieces of advice to help you save the earth.
Wear used clothes. Wearing your brother's, sister's or dad's old T-shirt means you save the energy.
Change your light bulbs (灯泡). Use energy-saving light bulbs. And don't forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room and turn off your television and computer when they are not in use!
Ride the bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.
Say no to plastic bags. The next time your parents go to the market, ask them to use baskets.
Open a window. Don't use the air conditioner, and let some fresh air in. When you have to use the conditioner, set the temperature higher in the summer and lower in the winter to save energy.
Make small changes in your daily life. Don't use paper cups, bags and boxes.
It's time for all of us to do something to save the earth.

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.

One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the "Sol-4". "It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker. "

The "Sol-4" works by reflecting (反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.

The cooker is also much "friendlier" than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.

At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.

Each cooker costs about $ 2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa.  It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

Each country has its own "art of living". For example, the word "niksen" shows how Dutch people fight stress and tiredness in a fast-paced lifestyle.

The term "niksen" comes from the Dutch word "niks"which refers to"nothing". In practice, "niksen"could be as simple as just relaxing, looking at your surroundings or listening to music- as long as it's without purpose and not done in order to achieve something. Think "simply sitting in a chair or looking out of the window,"says Ruut Veenhoven, a professor at Erasmus University who studies happiness.

"Niksen" sounds contrary to the advice that we were all given as kids. Nowadays, we're always told to stay bus y and work harder than everyone else. But "niksen" is against that attitude. It offers the chance to "deliciously do nothing", as Carolien Hamming told Time. She thinks that "niksen" is very important to staying healthy, since it's a form of men tal relaxation and healing. Just like a wild animal lying in wait for their food,"niksen" seems to be a natural state of being.

For some people,"niksen" can mean more than just men tal relaxation. It's also a way to imagine new ideas or plans. As an early adopter of "niksen", Jenny Holden, adds it to her daily lunch breaks."Within 10minutes of doing nothing-just staring and listening to myself-my head began to clear and pick out my work and home to-do lists", she told the Metro UK. However, for many, doing nothing isn't as simple as it sounds.In fact, it can be somewhat challenging to sit still and stare out a window.

Above all, "niksen" is a suggestion for balancing work and rest. As Dutch-bom writer Ogla Mecking wrote in Whoolly Magazine,"niksen" is the full enjoyment of life's breaks".

Everyone is encouraged to have your "niksen" moments. They give you the strength to face everyday challenges.
