Do you know that not only the fish but also some animals live in the sea? For example, the whale is not a fish. It can't breathe in the water. It swims in the water. But it comes up for air.
The blue whale is the world's biggest animal. There are other sea animals, too. One is called the dolphin. Dolphins need air to live. They breathe air, as whales do. Dolphins are very clever. They sometimes seem to speak to each other.

American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “Hi”. In Britain it is "Hello!" or "How are you?"“Hi!" is creeping(不知不觉地进入)into British, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, "Glad to know you. ” The British say, "How do you do?" or "Pleased to meet you. "When Americans say "Good-bye", they nearly always add, "Have a good day. " or “Have a good trip. " etc. to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day. ”
The British usually use "got" in the sense of “have”. The Americans hardly ever do. AmE: Do you have a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I do. BrE: Have you got a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I have.
There are a number of differences between American and British English in the spelling of words, e. g. check(US)/cheque(UK). Many American words ending in “or”, e. g. honor, labor are spelt in British English with an “our,” e. g. honour, labour. Many verbs in American English with “ize” or “izing” forms, e. g. organize, realizing are spelt in BrE with “ise” or “ising”, e. g. organise, realising. In American English, “practice” is used both for the verb and noun. In BrE, the verb is spelt “practise”, and the noun “practice. ” In AmE, one writes “traveler,” while in BrE, one writes “traveller”.
It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate (各自的)languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links(联系)between the two countries are so strong that linguistically(语言上),and probably culturally(文化上)too, they are closer together than ever before.
    AmE—— American English   BrE——British English

Dear Mike,

I'm so glad you're coming to China! Your mother, our foreign English teacher, told me you're worried about what you should and shouldn't do as a guest in China. Here's some advice. You will probably be invited to a big meal. You may find it earlier than you expect because Chinese people eat dinner much earlier than people in the West. There will be a lot of different dishes, not just three courses. You may find it difficult to use chopsticks if you haven't tried before. It's a good idea to get some practice. When the food is served, you should take time to look at it. The preparation takes a long time and everything will look beautiful. The plates will be placed in the middle of the table, for everyone to share.Take a little of everything and then have some more of the things you like.Chinese people like to talk about food,so it's a good topic of conversation. At the end of the meal, you will usually be served with fruit.Eat your fruit, thank your friends, and go.

I hope this is helpful.E-mail me if you have any other questions.

                                                                                                                              Yours,

                                                                                                                                   David Zhang

Imagine yourself getting thirsty or hungry during a mountain climbing exercise and there is a convenience* store right beside you, offering food and drinks, how great is that?

Rock climbing lovers in Pingjiang, Hunan Province, don't have to imagine this. They can stop and get food and drinks at a convenience store built on a mountain cliff *at the Shiniuzhai scenic area. The Shiniuzhai scenic area is famous for cliffs, canyons and rocks. It is also known for its glass-bottom bridge, which is one of the longest and highest glass bridges in the world.

Song Huizhou, manager of the Shiniuzhai scenic area, said the two-square-meter convenience store there is built on a mountainside about 120 meters above the ground. It was first built in 2017 and opened a year later. It takes people nearly one-and-a-half hours to reach the top. Visitors coming to experience the rock climbing program are usually amateurs*, so they often get thirsty and hungry along the way. Then the local government decided to build the store as a refreshment center for them. The food and drinks at the store are carried by staff members who work there every day. The climbers are allowed to take one free bottle of water and pay if they want more. However, the prices are the same as those at common stores. The store opens at 8 am and closes at 5 pm. If there are not many customers, there is no cashier* at the store and visitors can scan* the QR code with their phones to pay for the food and drinks by themselves.
