I'm Dave. I'm from the west of Ireland. When I finished university, I1to leave Ireland to find work. Although I2home. I enjoyed living in London for two years. But after that, I felt I needed a3. so I bought a ticket to Ecuador ,a country that many of my friends were talking about. Two months later,4was in Quito，a beautiful city high up in the mountains. First，I explored(考察)the city. Next，I decided to walk on the Camino Real，the most important Inca road. It was hard work. 5the views(景色)were really wonderful. During the walk，there were more and more clouds and it was6to see. Suddenly I heard some magical Irish music. It 7me of home. “How could it be?”I just 8believe it. I thought l was dreaming. The next day, when I came down for breakfast at my hotel. I9found out the truth. 10 was practicing Irish music at the hotel garden(花园). It was an American tourist who was making the magical music of my home!

    Some people have a very poor sense of direction(方向). Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

    When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask people the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

    Now I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often get helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If someone asks me the way somewhere, I will say, "Sorry, I am new here."

    Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting.

    When I just got to my office, the secretary(秘书) showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine(想象) how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight.

I always tried to do something for the children in some poor villages. On a hot July day, I{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (参加)a group of volunteers and came to a small village in the west of China to  build a library at a primary school.

After a three-hour ride, we{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(到达) the village  at last. The school was poor and we had to choose a{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (明亮的) small room as the library. Our job was to{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (改变……的位置) the books into the room, place them on the{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (架子) and set up small tables and chairs.

I soon found the work wasn't as fun as I had{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (期盼). Later that afternoon, students began to borrow books from the library. One student thanked us again and again because they couldn't{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (买得起) so many books. My{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(心) was filled with Joy. Then we worked on and in the end, we {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (创造) a library.

It only took us one day to build the library, but it will make a{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (差别) to the children's lives.

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?

My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one—day job. And that led to a nine—day job, and so on.

To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree. 

Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?

It's now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos. 

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热情的)about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There's something to photograph everywhere.
