XBOX 360 Kinetic, RoboSapien, WiiParty, theseare just a few of the modern toys sold in recent years. But some of the most populartoys are actually quite old.

Gameshave been around for thousands of years. In 4000 B. C, Babylonians played a boardgame that was similar to chess. Yo-yos made of stone were first used in ancientGreece around 1000 B C. And kites appeared in China around the same time.

Another famous game is Scrabble. It was inventedby an architect in the 1930s, but it didn't get popular until 1953 And since then, more than 100 million sets have been sold worldwide.

As you can imagine, toys and games are a multi-billion-dollarindustry. Mr. Potato Head, the first toy advertised on TV, grossed more than $4million in its first year. Play-Doh made its inventor Joseph McVicker a millionaireby his 27th birthday, while Mattel sells 1. 5 million Barbie dolls each week (that'stwo dolls each second!).

Some toys go out of fashion, but then becomepopular again, such as Rubik's Cube. Research says parents are increasingly choosingto buy toys they remember from their own childhood.

These days, toys are not just for fun. RoboSapienis a remote-controlled robot that was launched in 2004. He can walk, turn aroundand do other poses. RoboSapien was designed by Mark Tilden, who once created robotsfor NASA space missions. He expected the toy to be used mostly by and scientists, but almost 2 million RoboSapiens have been sold worldwide since its launch as atoy?

    Fancy a game anyone?

Dear Simon,

I am glad to know that you have joined your school's reading club. I enjoy reading too. I want to introduce my favourite novel to you, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The novel tells the story of a boy named Charlie Bucket and his adventures in Mr Wonka's chocolate factory. The Bucket family is very poor. Charlie loves Wonka chocolate bars. But he only receives one chocolate bar a year on his birthday.

One day, Mr Wonka decides to open up his factory to five lucky children. They can find golden tickets in their Wonka chocolate bars. On his birthday, Charlie's family all hope that his chocolate bar will contain a golden ticket. But sadly, it doesn't. Three days later, Charlie finds a coin on the ground. He buys some chocolate bars with it. To his great surprise, he finds a golden ticket!

Charlie goes to the factory with his grandfather. It is an amazing place. There is even a chocolate river! One by one, the other four children on the tour cause trouble. They are all taken away. Charlie is the only child who doesn't cause any trouble. Mr Wonka tells him that he wins the contest.

Do you know what Charlie wins? You will find the answer in the novel. Do share your feelings about the story with me when you finish reading it. I'm looking forward to your reply. I hope you will like this novel.

With love,

Carl

Beijing is known as a large and busy city. But if you walk down one of its main streets into a small alley (巷),you may find something different—Beijing's hutongs!

People say they live in hutongs,but in fact,they live in the buildings on one side of the hutongs. Hutongs are the alleys between houses.

Beijing has been China's capital city for over 700 years. As the city grows,the number of its people and houses is becoming larger and larger. Now there are more than 6,000 hutongs in Beijing. If all of them were connected end to end

Among all these hutongs,there are certainly some exceptional ones. While most of them are straight,some are curved(弯曲的). Jiuwan Hutong is the one with the most curves. It's only about 390 meters long. Its name means nine curves,the narrowest hutong in Beijing is called Qianshi Hutong. It is only 40 cm wide at its narrowest point. In this hutong,only one person can pass at a time.

Beijing people love hutongs because they bring them a lot of fun and relaxation. In the hutongs,people can enjoy the sun,sing songs and play chess with their neighbours. They can talk with others and listen to some stories

Hutongs are not only a symbol of Beijing's culture,but also an important part of China's national culture. So people try to keep them well as historical places of interest.

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.

Creating an interest in what they learn

Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something they are interested in. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.

Practicing and learning from mistakes

Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, "use it or lose it"! Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. Practice makes perfect. Good learners are also not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.

Developing their study skills

It is not enough to just study hard. You have to know how to study. Good learners find out the best ways to learn well. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. Good learners also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.

Asking questions

Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning. Learning is a life-long journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn l becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.
