   Alice was twenty-three years old, and she was a nurse at a big hospital . She was very kind and all of her patients (病人) likes her very much .
   One day she was out shopping. She saw an old woman. The woman was waiting to cross (穿越) a busy street . Alice wanted to cross the street, too. So she went over to help the woman cross the street. When Alice was near her, she suddenly laughed(笑) and said, “ Mrs Green ! You were my patient in the hospital last year.”
   Mrs Green was very happy to see her.
   “I will help you cross the street, Mrs Green,” Alice said.
   “Oh, thank you very much , Alice , ” Mrs Green said and stepped (走) forward (向前). “No, no, Mrs Green,” Alice said quickly . “Wait! The light is still red.”

It's Charlie's birthday today, but he isn't feeling happy. No one wishes him a happy birthday. Mother says nothing about his birthday. She just tells Charlie to play outside. At lunchtime, his mother calls, “Come in for lunch, Charlie!” Charlie slowly walks into his house. But the living room looks different. Charlie sees a big “Happy Birthday” banner(横幅). Then, he sees a birthday cake, balloons, presents, and all of his friends. “Happy birthday!” everyone shouts. Charlie's face lights up. He is happy and surprised(吃惊). No one forgets his birthday after all!

   “Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen.”
    After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer(播音员). I took the bus to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I was refused every time. In one studio, a nice lady told me that big stations didn't want to accept inexperienced persons. “Go to the countryside and find a small station that'll give you a chance,” she said.
    I returned home, Dixon in Illinois. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Smith Ward had opened a store and wanted a local sportsman to manage its sports department. Since I had played high school football in Dixon, I applied(申请). The job sounded just right for me. But I still failed in the interview. At that moment, mom's words came to my mind: “Everything happens for the best.” Dad offered me a car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport in Iowa. The program director, named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
    As I left his office, I felt sad. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard MacArthur calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday's game!
    On my way home, I thought of my mother's words again: “Everything happens for the best if you carry on. One day something good will happen.”

A rich young man decided that he would like to do some diving(潜水) in the sea, so he bought a diving suit and all the other things that he needed, and took some lessons at a diving school. Then one day he walked into the water by himself and began to explore（探索） the bottom（底部）of the sea. He saw a lot of beautiful fish and other things, and then, after half an hour, he suddenly saw a man waving（摇动）his arms and legs around wildly near the bottom of the sea. He was wearing only a bathing suit. The rich young man was very surprised to see him, so he took out a plastic notebook and a special pencil, which could write under water, and wrote, “What are you doing here?” He showed the notebook to the other man, who then took the pencil and wrote, “Drowning!”（溺水）

Millie is a little girl who is at the age of nine. She is a pupil in a primary school. She works hard at her subjects. In class, she takes an active part in all kinds of activities. She looks smarter than her classmates.

One day, she was doing her homework after supper as usual. Her father was not in. Her mother was taking a shower in the bathroom. After she finished her homework, Millie asked her mother to check it for her, but her mother didn't answer her. A few minutes later, her mother was still in the bathroom. Millie felt strange. She knocked at the door. But her mother had no answer. She pushed the door open and found her mother lying on the floor. At the same time, she smelled something terrible. It was the gas. She quickly opened the window, turned off the gas and called 120 and 110 for help. Soon some doctors and policemen came and sent her mother to the nearest hospital. Her mother was saved at last.

Why did the little girl know how to do that? That was because she had learned how to save herself and others in danger in school.

Issumboshi was a one-inch boy, and he was so small that he could not do any useful work on the family farm. His grandfather became tired of feeding such a useless man and sent him away to the city.

“Learn to become a warrior(武士),”he told his grandson.“Then perhaps you will grow into a man of normal height.”

To help the little man on his way, his grandfather gave him a cup to use as a boat on the river, his mother gave him two long grains of rice to use as oars and his father gave him a pin to use as a sword.

Issumboshi's journey was long and dangerous. However, because he was so brave and clever, he at last reached the city safely.

To his surprise, the streets were empty. The people of the city were hiding in their houses from a powerful giant.

Immediately, brave Issumboshi went out to meet the giant. The giant tried to pick him up and eat him, but Issumboshi was so small and quick that the giant could not get hold of him.

Issumboshi struck again and again at the giant with his sword. Before long, the giant fell to the ground and died from a thousand wounds.

“Oh, what a great warrior he is!”the people of the city shouted as they came out of their houses.“What a great hero this young man is!”Hearing this, Issumboshi felt so proud that he stood up straight. He told himself, “I am already taller than I was. How wise my grandfather was to send me to the city!
