Britain's high streets are dying slowly
Twenty years ago, the prosperous high street(繁华商业区) was the heart of most cities. It was crowded with customers. Nowadays, high streets are declining, with very few shops and shoppers. With about 14 shops down every day, Britain's high streets are dying little by little. It's fairly easy to understand. To start with, people are spending less because of the economic recession(衰退). On top of that, more and more people are using the Internet to do their shopping. And it is not easy for shopkeepers in the high streets, either. Finally, there are the out-of-town retail parks with free car parking that sell just about everything at very low prices. What can be done? Prime Minister David Cameron has hired Mary Portas, a British business woman and star of TV show Mary Queen of Shops, to bring some life back into Britain's high streets. She's talked about creating "magnets(磁石)" to attract people back to the centre. In one town, a bicycle rickshaw(人力车) service is delivering people's shopping to their homes. where children can be cared for while parents are shopping. Members of the public have also voiced their opinions. "My ideal shopping center is one where there's a wide selection of attractive looking shops, with cheap parking and good public transport links," said a 28-year-old man. "I'd like to see Night Shopping evenings where shops are open through to 10 pm or later," said a 22-year-old girl.

Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.
One of the best ways to form good study habits for your kids is to design(设计、制定) a schedule that they keep to. Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} And it will also give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.
Allow them to study in blocks(一段) of time. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Ideal study times are usually after dinner or right after school before dinner.
Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive(被动的) activity. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}
You'll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} After you've set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#} This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input(投入) you give your children during study periods will help form a bond(纽带、关系) and make studying enjoyable.
A. For example, they may want to study for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. B. Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed. C. Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too. D. Finally, spend time with your kids when they're studying. E. Try to stop this bad habit by offering some sort of reward. F. This will help your kids to learn to schedule(制定学习时间表) their day. G. Pick a place where your children can study properly. |
A. Consider the touch barrier. B. Consider how you insult each other. C. They should know that you are not serious. D. These are sure signs that your friends trust you. E. Are they acting fake—perhaps hiding an insecurity? F. True friends should not get one another into trouble. G. True friends will remain faithful and find their way through a fight. |
Sometimes it can be hard to recognize a true friend, one who is loyal (忠诚的) and one who is worth keeping by your side. The suggestions provided in this article will help to guide you in working out which friends are likely to be true.
Be able to trust your friends. You should be able to trust true friends and they should return this trust. Your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows. Let you share secrets. Ask you for advice. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, if your friends hide things from you and act secretive, this could be a sign that they do not trust you, but it could also mean your friends keep to themselves or don't like to reveal too much about themselves.
Consider comfort. How comfortable do your friends feel when they are around you? Watch them, are they being themselves or are they timid (胆怯的) around you? {#blank#}2{#/blank#} True friendships can take a while to develop, but if your friends are true, they should feel comfortable around you.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#} This is not meant in a romantic way, but consider whether your friends are comfortable with the touch. If your friends are fine with hugging you, leaning on you, resting their heads on your shoulder and so forth, then you can judge they love you.
Think about loyalty. True friends are always there for one another. If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} You can trust friends with anything, knowing that they will be loyal and will not let your secrets out.
Look at how you fight. Nearly all best friends fight; so if you and your friend have a little dispute (争论), don't sweat it! {#blank#}5{#/blank#} They will not tell each other's secrets and they still care about each other.
