Money Matters

    Parents should help their children understand money. So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

    ⒈The basic function of money

    Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员). When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

    ⒉Money lessons

    Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. If you must say no to a child's request to spend money, explain, "You have enough toy trucks for now." Or, if the request is for many different things, say "You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy."

    ⒊

    Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands(品牌) of a product—a name-brand butter and a generic(一般的), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase(购买) with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

A. Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.

B. Wise decisions

C. The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

D. Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things.

E. The value of money

F. Permit the child to choose between them.

G. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.

举一反三
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    Do you want to worry less? Of course you do, right? That's like me asking if I could send you free bacon. Worry is like black mold — it appears in damp conditions and spreads uncontrollably. And often times we don't realize it's there until it's killing us. We must get rid of worry before it destroys us. But how? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Do What You Need to Do.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You ought not to avoid tough projects or hard conversions until the last moment. If you don't do what you should be doing, you will end up spending the rest of the time worrying about the must-do things. Believe it or not, the anxiety that comes from worrying is much worse than the task we're worried about.

    Get Intentional.

    I think many of us act like we're puppets in a play and we're waiting for something or someone to put us in the right place. You just react to whatever is going on. We need to stop letting life just happen. We need to live on purpose. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    You can't have intentionality without making plans. Making plans will enable you to achieve your aims more smoothly. Yet, don't place your plans in stone. You can adjust your plans flexibly. Accept changes. Make new plans. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    There are other ways to lessen worry. As long as you are determined to take action, you will live a worry-free life.

A. Worry ruins creativity.

B. Make Plans

C. Do what you should be doing.

D. Here are some effective ways to deal with it.

E. Then move forward.

F. You do the same as people around you do.

G. Nothing can cause worry like purposelessness.

任务型阅读

    We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

1). Get Out of Bed Earlier

If you normally get up at 7: 30 a. m. , try getting up at 7: 00 a. m. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been meaning to finish. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

2). Do the Important Tasks First

    Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones.

3). Reduce Interruptions

    If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.

    When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.

4). {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When you're working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with.

A. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.

B. I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long.

C. Would you want me to make your day longer?

D. Take Breaks When Necessary

E. If you have an office door, close it.

F. If you work like this, you'll usually save time.

G. Stay Focused on Your Work

How to improve your perseverance(毅力)

    If you're familiar with the story of the hare and the tortoise, you know that the tortoise proved that perseverance is much more important than speed. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, but fewer people have the patience and perseverance of the tortoise. Here are some tips that can help you to improve your perseverance.

    Set goals(确定目标)and write them down.

    If you don't know what you want to accomplish(完成), it's hard to persevere until you do. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, instead of making many projects(项目)that may upset you

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, and cross each step off the list as you complete it.

    If you want to master the ability to cook German dishes, you'll need to read cookbooks, study the recipes(食谱), buy ingredients(食料)and practice making the dishes. Write down all these steps and remove each step as you go.

    Make a list of the rewards(回报)related to any project to encourage yourself to persevere.

    When you want to lose 40 pounds, it may seem like a difficult goal. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. You can lower your blood sugar or fit into your favorite pair of jeans. Keep those rewards in mind to encourage yourself to stick to your diet and exercise program.

    Imagine your success.

    Take time each day to sit back, relax and picture the life you'll lead once you've reached your goal.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Read them over several times a day to encourage yourself to keep going.

A. Like the hare, many people start off strong

B. And you should focus on every step carefully

C. You can't lose weight only by going on a diet

D. Make a list of the steps needed to reach your goal

E. But there are big rewards for doing so

F. Choose one or two goals that are most important to you and work toward those

G. Or you can write out a paragraph or two about how reaching your goal will change your life

任务型阅读

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}There's always someone to talk to, so you need never be lonely.

    Besides these obvious benefits, there are some you may not notice.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}when living with others. To examine the effect of living alone, Australian university researchers did much research and found that people living alone tended to eat less fresh food including fruits and vegetables, which can have side effects on long-term health. However, those living with others generally got benefits from a more varied diet compared to those living alone.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} The researchers believe the social and cultural roles played by cooking, food preparation and eating may be important considerations. For example, those living with friends have someone else to go shopping with, and thus, they are more likely to buy higher-quality fresh food regularly.

    In addition, a person living alone can eat whatever they want at any time of the day. However, it's helpful to have someone around who questions your decision to eat frozen pizza at 3:00 am.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Top Healthy Homework Habits

    Your homework habits might be affecting your grades. Are you feeling tired, painful, or bored when it comes to homework time? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} You can change the way you feel by taking better care of your mind and your body.

    ◆{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Studies show that teens natural sleep patterns are different from those of adults. This often causes sleep loss among teens, since they tend to have trouble going to sleep at night, and have trouble waking in the mornings. You can avoid some of the problems that come with sleep deprivation by changing some of your nighttime habits.

    ◆Improve your eating habit

    Do you feel tired or dizzy a lot of the time? If you sometimes avoid working on a project because you just don't have the energy, you can increase your energy level by changing your diet. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    ◆Improve your memory

    A great way to improve your homework habits is to improve your memory with brain exercise. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} But there is one mnemonic (记忆的) method that has been around since ancient times. Ancient accounts show that early Greek and Roman orators used the "loci" (轨迹) method of remembering long speeches and lists. You may be able to use this method to enhance your memory at test time.

    ◆Fight the urge to procrastinate (拖延)

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Don't fall for it! Procrastination is like a little white lie we tell ourselves. We often think we'll feel better about studying later if we do something fun now, like playing with a pet, watching a TV show, or even cleaning our room. It's not true.
