Everyone keeps some important {#blank#}1{#/blank#}and events in mind. I remember very clearly the day when my younger sister was born (出生). It was a(n) {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Saturday in December, and it was snowing. My mother went to the hospital with my father. I stayed home with Aunt Shelly. We {#blank#}3{#/blank#}the room and made the bed for the new baby. And then I made a snowman outside and called it Baby.

There was still no news by dinner time. In the beginning, we were very worried. Aunt Shelly and I both sat {#blank#}4{#/blank#}by the phone. At around 9:15 p.m., suddenly, the phone ring broke the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. My father said it was a beautiful girl. They named her Emma.

We were very excited to {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the news.

The next day, I got up early before the sun rose because I couldn't wait to see Emma. We made {#blank#}7{#/blank#}way to the hospital because it was hard to walk on the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}road. When we arrived at the hospital, I saw Emma was {#blank#}9{#/blank#}in Mom's arms. She looked so small but really lovely. When I took her hands for the first time, I realized what it meant to be an elder brother—I would protect (保护) her and never let anybody {#blank#}10{#/blank#}her. That's what I have done in the past ten years. And I will keep on doing it in the future.

 短文填空题

My only purpose was to become the star on our football team. That meant beating out Miller King, who was the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(good) player in our school. On my {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (thirteen) birthday this year, I promised I would make it come true.

Football season started in September and all summer long I worked out. I {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (carry) my football everywhere for practice. Just before September, Miller was struck {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a car and lost his right arm. I went to see him after he came back from hospital. He looked very pale, but he didn't cry.

That season, I broke all of Miller's {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (record) while he watched the home games from the bench. We went 10:11 {#blank#}6{#/blank#} I was named "Most Valuable Player", but I often had crazy dreams in which I was to blame (责备) for Miller's accident.

One afternoon, I was crossing the field to go home and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (see) Miller in trouble climbing over a fence which wasn't difficult to climb if you had both arms. I'm sure I was the last person in the world he wanted to accept help from. But even that challenge he accepted. I helped him move slowly over the fence. When we were {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (final) safe on the other side, he said to me, "You know. I didn't tell you this during the season, but you did {#blank#}9{#/blank#} fine job. Thank you for doing the job for me."

His words freed (解脱) me from {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (I) bad dreams. I thought to myself how even without an arm he was more of a leader. Damaged but not defeated, he was still ahead of me. I was right to have respected him. From that day on, I grew bigger and a little more real.

Zhang Daqian was born in 1899 in Sichuan. He came from an art-loving family His mother first taught him painting. He copied lots of great paintings he could see. Shitao and Bada Sbanren influenced him a lot. In the early 1940s, Zhang studied the Buddhist wall paintings in Dunhuang for two years. This was important for his art growth.

Zhang's works are famous for his many painting styles. He could paint detailed portraits(肖像). He was creative and had his own style, but his art was based on Chinese tradition. People like his later works, especially his lively splashed-ink landscapes.

When Zhang was old, he mastered the art of "painting from heart to hand". In 1971, he chose this phrase for a stamp. This phrase has two meanings. First, Zhang was proud that he could paint nature's different things with various styles. He got this ability by copying old masters' works, making his art combine many historical styles. He also traveled a lot, which gave him more life experience to paint the world's beauty. Second, the phrase shows Zhang's belief that an artist should follow his heart to show "spirit harmony". This is an old idea about Chinese painting beauty Before painting, Zhang knew what he wanted to paint and what feeling he wanted to show. He knew how to amaze people with his paintings.

Zhang lived a long life and died at 83 in 1983. He was energetic. He painted many paintings in his life, about 500 per year on average.

In 2011, Zhang became the most popular Chinese artist at auction(拍卖会), more popular than Pablo Picasso. People still want his works very much.
