Most of you know this mathematical game, of course. You and your friend draw crosses and circles on a sheet of paper. You do it one after another. The first pupil who gets three marks in a row wins. But do you know that you can play this game another way and it will become more interesting? You must try to make your friend win. If you get your three marks in a row, you don't win — you lose!

It is more difficult to play this game the other way. The second pupil can always win (if he plays the right way), but he may not win if the first pupil begins with his mark in the center. Then if the first pupil always takes a place on the other side of his friend's mark, nobody will win.
If your friend does not know the secret which we have explained, you must play each time so as to leave him the greatest number of ways to win. You may try a few games and you will see how interesting it is to play the game this way.

What do you usually do on your smartphone? Send text messages, make phone calls or play video games? Now, thanks to a beginner-friendly programming(程序设计) tool, kids can do more than just play games on their smartphones-they can make their own games.

US high school student Samuel Ndungi spent a few months learning how to make apps(应用软件)for smart-phones.

"I was really shocked that you could do this on your own," Ndungi said "I thought only people from Microsoft and big companies could do this."

Ndungi took a class run by his teacher, Michael Braun. In Braun's class, kids learned how to use the beginner-friendly programming tool to program their own mobile apps.

This tool is called TouchDevelop. It puts basic instructions(基本指令) into blocks of code(代码), and kids can put them together like Legos to run games, stories and other apps.

With TouchDevelop, student Tony Huynh learned how to make his own games. "You get to put your own thoughts into the game, like the animals you want, the kinds of backgrounds you would like to see, and so on," he said.

Another student Shina Williams wrote a program with about 80 lines of code that paints a picture of his childhood Teddy Bear." It's your own creativity, your own mark(印记) of something that's put in there and it stays in there, " she said.

Coding is more than just a job skill. Children who learn coding also find new ways to think, create and express themselves.

If you're ever apart from your children, a new study says just talking on the phone will help just as much as a hug(拥抱).

If you're a parent who spends long hours on the job, you probably feel sorry for spending so much time away from your kids. But the results of a new study show that a mother's voice alone can be just as comforting to an anxious child as physical contact(接触).

In an experiment, researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison asked a group of girls between the ages of 7 and 12 to solve math problems in front of judges—a stressful situation for anyone. Before the girls were set to give their answers, the researchers measured their levels of two hormones(荷尔蒙): cortisol, which goes up during stressful periods, and oxytocin, the "love" hormone, which goes down at the same time.

After the girls finished the problems, some of them got to meet up with their mothers right away. The moms came in and hugged the girls. Another group of the girls didn't see their mothers, but received phone calls from them, in which their mothers told them how well they'd done. The final group had no contact with their mothers, but instead watched an animal movie, March of the Penguins.

Finally, the girls' hormone levels were measured again. Although the movie was interesting, it did nothing to reduce the children's anxiety—but, surprisingly, both the physical contact and phone calls from their mothers had the same effect on reducing the girls' stress levels.

So, no matter how old you are, if you're feeling stressed about something in your life, a phone call to Mom might be just the key to help you feel better.

Have you ever dreamed about sending a letter to yourself or your friends in the future? While express mail(快递) is a fast way to send your letters, there is another type of mail appearing in China as a new business—future mail.

"The letter should be sent next Mother's Day and not a day earlier!" Lin Xiaofan, a college student in Shanghai, tells one of the companies offering the service.

Lin Xiaofan wrote the letter to her mother nearly a year earlier to express her love to her mother for next Mother's Day.

"Offering this service makes people slow down and lets them understand the meaning of 'time' in another way," said Zheng Zhimin, manager at a "future mail" company. Zheng thinks "future mail" letters help remind us of care, friendship and love.

While "future mail" is becoming more and more popular, some people are wondering what will happen if the postal address changes or if the company goes broken before the letters arrive.

Zheng said customers are glad to sign a contract(签订合同) to make sure that they can be compensated if their letters are lost or damaged.

Most of the customers are college students and young white-collar(白领) workers. Psychologists (心理学家) said that young Chinese might have a new way to express their feelings through this service. Most people put their hopes and wishes in the letter so that they can experience the connection(联系) between the past and the present when they receive the letter.
