⑴Do not waste time in learning a list of English words. It is the hardest way to remember English words. How do you learn to speak Chinese? You did it by listening carefully to the people talking to each other. You can find radio programs, TV programs and records, and listen to them carefully. The best way to learn all new words is through ears. As you listen to more and more dialogues, you will learn how English is pronounced in phrases and sentences. Of course, it is not enough to learn new words. You must learn how words are put together, and why some words in English are emphasized(重读).

⑵Some people have found that they can learn the names of everyday objects such as boxes, bottles, cups and desks in the following way. They write the names of objects on paper and put the paper on them, then say the words. Try this and see if this way works for you. If it does not, then go on to practice your dialogues.

The number of people living in the rainforest is rising，but the rainforest itself is becoming smaller!

During the 20th century，huge areas of rainforests were cut down. More and more people in Brazil and Indonesia moved into rainforest areas to find land for living. Local farmers cut down trees to grow crops（庄稼）. Large companies have also moved into the rainforests to develop their factories. 

The problem is that the area of the rainforest is becoming smaller and smaller. Scientists say that destroying （破坏） the rainforest is ▲ the earth and should be stopped. But why？Rainforest plants help to clean the air. What's more，different parts of rainforest plants can be used to produce useful medicines and may be the key to solving serious health problems. 

So how can we solve the problem？Governments can make some rules to protect their forests. Companies can create jobs elsewhere，so that fewer people have to live and work in the rainforests. Farmers are encouraged to plant crops in certain areas，and this helps to stop the soil from being washed away and produces better crops. 

More than half of the plants and animals that live in the rainforest can't be found anywhere else in the world. It is important to make sure that these forests are used well and protected by people. 

Chinese names are different(不同) from English names. In China, the family name is before(在… 之前) the given name. For example, my name is Li Daming. Li is my family name and Daming is my given name.

In the UK, people's names usually have three parts(部分):the first name, the middle name and the last name. The last name is the family name. The first name is the given name, and the middle name is the given name, too. For example, my friend is Jim Daniel Brown. Brown is his family name. His given name is Jim Daniel.

People use(使用) Mr. Or Ms. before the family name, but not before the given name. So you can say "Mr. Li" or "Mr. Brown", but you can't say "Mr. Daming" or "Mr. Jim".

The Dragon Head-raising Festival

China is a country with a long and rich history. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The Double Second Festival（the Dragon Head-raising Festival or Longtaitou Festival） is one of them. This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It stands for the start of spring and farming. 

The dragon plays an important role in Chinese culture. Dragon culture is one of the most popular cultures in China. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} People celebrated the Dragon Head﹣raising Festival with many customs（习俗） about the dragon in ancient times. 

On this special day，people put ashes （灰） in the kitchen. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} People believed that if the dragon went into their houses，they could have a good luck all year round. People also ate special food. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} For example，people ate noodles called" dragon whiskers noodles" and dumplings called" dragon ears". Besides，people sent gifts to each other, picked vegetables and went on a spring outing.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Today people hurry to have their hair cut，especially have their children's hair cut on the Dragon Head-raising Festival. They want to make themselves have new looks and have a good year. 
 

The Spring Festival is a traditional festival in China. During the festival, Chinese people have many activities. They paste Spring Festival couplets（贴春联）, greeting the New Year and saying goodbye{#blank#}1{#/blank#} the old year. On the first day of the Spring Festival, people hang out, wearing new clothes. Nowadays, children get red packets from their parents and their {#blank#}2{#/blank#} by WeChat. It is a good time for people to visit relatives and friends. More importantly, the Spring Festival is celebrated not only in China but also in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} parts of the world.

The Spring Festival has become a key time for Chinese living in the US. They join in a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} evening party to welcome the traditional New Year. The Chinese New Year will be welcomed with three weeks of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}across Australia. Thousands of people come to Sydney's Chinatown. They enjoy fireworks and lion dances. The family dinner on New Year's Eve is an important tradition for Chinese {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they were born in Singapore or moved there from China. They usually hold it at home.
