When was the last time you saw three men running down a forest trail(小径)in the rain wearing flip-flops(拖鞋)?That's what my friend Brandon, Josh and I were doing last autumn. We were looking for a waterfall(瀑布).We didn't have much time to get to the waterfall and back, so we were running. We were wearing flip-flops to prevent our shoes getting dirty.

It was raining, but lightly. It kept us cool as we climbed over giant stones and through a shallow(浅的)stream. We followed red arrows(箭头)and crossed that stream several times, walking on toward the promised waterfall. Time was not on our side, however, and we were forced to turn around. As we started back, we looked at the shallow stream we had just crossed. Where did this rushing river come from? That was when we realized a flash flood was around!

In the few minutes the water rose at a fast speed. Now there were no big stones to be seen-only what looked like lumps(隆起)covered with rushing water. We had no choice but to move our way back carefully in the rushing water -in flip-flops. We had crossed the stream not once or twice, but six times in search of a waterfall that we never even reached!

With most of the crossings, we needed each other's help if we didn't want to be washed away by water. Wet all over, we felt relaxed after we made the last crossing.

"My dad always told me to keep off a river when travelling in the rain." Josh said as we hurried back down the path.

"Why didn't you tell us that earlier?" I laughed.

"Would it have made a difference?" came the reply.

    He had a point.

Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely.

Then one day in April in 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss's house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra.

Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. "He became my night watch cat," Moss said. "Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up."

After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn't long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss's mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss's feet.

This past May Zebby was named Britain's National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss's life easier. He has had no training at all, but his natural abilities seem to have told him that his owner needs his help.

"Zebby has made my house a home," Moss said. "I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now."

Anyunna Phillips,a teacher in Atlanta,wants her students to know that they can do anything confidently by making a rule. The rule is that every morning,they take turns looking at themselves in the mirror and repeating some positive affirmations(肯定). Some of their favourites are,Anyunna cheers and agrees with them,sometimes offering a high five.

"It seems that students walk away from the mirror standing a little taller after doing that. I always remind them of their daily affirmations and tell them they can achieve anything. I really want to help them build their confidence,belief in themselves,and self﹣love

The students aren't the only ones who are benefiting from Anyunna's daily affirmations. She says her own mental health has improved since she started the program,and other teachers have followed suit in the school and are seeing success in other classrooms,too.

Then on her website pages where she spreads feel﹣good messages,many people have given positive response(回应). "It's been amazing. So many people are sending so many positive messages or sharing their own stories and they say I've encouraged them to just keep trying

Anyunna says the response has encouraged her to keep going,too. She wants to do more to help kids reach their fullest potential(潜力).

You don't have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is finding creative ways to make a change - and he's inviting bikers to join him.

Daan Ronscgaarde. 38, is a designer from Holland. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog(雾霾)Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In Holland, he designed a shining bicycle path.

Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike - sharing company Ofo to create a new product for public use. It's an air - cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker's face.

It's no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it's common for thick clouds of haze(霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions(排放物) to cover areas of China.

In 2016, only one - fourth of Chinese cities met the country's air quality standards, according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection "

Of course one tower and a few bikes won't solve China's air pollution problem, " Daan said. " But smog - free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities. "
