How to Meet New People

    It is easy to find a place where people gather. But once you're in a room full of people, then what? The trick is finding a way to approach someone and get them talking to you.

    Prepare to meet new people before you arrive. . Don't think in terms of yes or no questions. You should consider questions that will allow the person to contribute more than a one-word answer to the conversation.

    Arrive at your event or place. Don't panic when you walk in the door. Take your time and look over the room.     Reducing the amount of sleep affects students' performance at school. An American study asked schoolteachers to look at the effects of sleep restriction(限制) on children between six and twelve years of age. The teachers found that children who stayed up late had trouble thinking clearly and had more learning problems.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Doctor Fallone now works at the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. He presented the results last month at a science reporter conference in Washington, D. C. The Publication Sleep also reported the findings.

    The teachers were asked to complete weekly performance reports on seventy-four schoolchildren. The study lasted three weeks. During that period, Doctor Fallone and his team controlled the amount of sleep the children received.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} During another week, every child was kept awake later than normal. Each night, the youngest boys and girls had less than eight hours of sleep. The older ones were limited to six and a half hours. During the final week of the study, each child received no less than ten hours of sleep a night.

    The teachers were not told about how much sleep the students received. The study found that students who received eight hours or less had the most difficulty remembering old information. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    The study did not find that sleep restriction caused hyperactivity(极度活跃) in the children. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Have you heard about Leap year? Leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. It normally occurs every four years, always on an even-numbered year. The extra day is added to our shortest month. That is the second month of the year, which in non-leap years has 28 days, two fewer than any other month. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    We also call Leap year the bissextile year (闰年). {#blank#}2{#/blank#} In our calendar system there is a need for a leap year because the solar year (the time it takes the earth to go around the sun once)is actually slightly more than 365 days long.     It is said that Leap year was first made part of the calendar by the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar. His astronomers had calculated the length of the solar year to be 365 days and six hours. So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar.  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    However, Caesar's adjustment was not completely accurate because his astronomers' year exceeded the true solar year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. By 1582, a difference of ten days had developed between the calendar year and the true solar year. To correct this error, Pope Gregory XⅢ ruled that every fourth year would continue to be a leap year except for century years that could not be divided evenly by 400. By this system, century years such as 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the year 2000 was a leap year.  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    People born on Feb 29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}But if they go strictly by the calendar, they have only one-fourth as many birthday celebrations as most people.

    Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their name in a polite way. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you're with.

    Make good conversation

    Let the lines be your guide

    Slow down

    If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it's hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
