I have been using the Internet since I was five years old, when my dad first sat me down in front of a computer and connected me the World Wide Web.
I've always felt like a master of the Internet world. AOL Instant Messaging, MSN, Gmail, Facebook. Myspace—I've got it all under control. I thought there was nothing more to it besides checking my e-mail and wasting my time, until I was introduced to electronic commerce(e-commerce): business on the Internet.
Some online business are run from one- room home offices. Others have hundreds of employee(雇员)spread across five different continent. Have you ever heard of Amazon. com, Yahoo. com?
My friends often said they got cheap textbooks off Amazon.com, or had a good deal(交易)on Steve Madden boots that were on sale at SteveMaden.com. Unfortunately for me, I continued my "e-commerceless"Web-surfing, unaware(不知道)of all the deals I was missing out on.
That is, of course, until my sister finally sold the idea to me.
"Why are all these packages arriving in the mail for you, Katy?" I asked her one day. Strange envelopes had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister and we all know little sisters should never be getting more mail than their elders!
"Oh, it's the things I ordered online!" she answered. I watched speechlessly as she opened them. There was no way our parents were letting her spend that much money- online or off!
"How much did all of this coat?"
"Oh, only about $15in all!" She said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It's way better than going to the mall."
I felt as if my entire life, there had been a store right in my backyard that I had never walked into! That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for my summer course online for 10 percent of the publishing price. A few days later, I bought an iPod protector and a book or two via the wonderful eBay.com.

Astronauts are not like pilots, who fly into sky. They need some special trainings. They will fly into space. First they go to the Johnson space center in Houston Texas. They are tested there. Space doctors want to know how strong and smart they are.

First of all, their hearts are tested. The people walk or run. Next, the space doctors see how fast their hearts are beating.

Then it is another important test. In this test the person must curl his body up in a ball. And when he is in that position, he will be put into a round cloth bag. The doctors don't tell him how long he will have to stay in the bag. If a spaceship broke down in space, the astronauts would get into bags like these. Then they would have to wait, curled up in darkness, until they are saved. You can know that an astronaut must not be afraid of tight spaces or darkness.

After these tests, scientists only choose the best people to start astronaut training in a training center. They will learn many other things in training. They will learn how to jump out of moving airplane, to blow up a lifeboat and get into it while they are in the ocean.

They also have to learn how to get lifted out of the ocean by a helicopter.

When they finish training, the astronauts go on to work. They stay in good situation by running and doing exercise. They read about the special jobs. In that way they will be able to learn new facts about space travel.

Finally, the astronaut is told to go to work on a flight into space. The members begin to know each other first. Then they can learn which jobs each will do.

When settlers (移民)came to America during the 1600s, they were surprised to find so many trees. Some trees were so huge that a large man could not put his arms around them. Those trees helped the settlers a lot. They were glad and thankful to have these trees. They used them to build houses and make fire. From the wood of the trees, they made furniture, tools and so on.

Most people thought the forests would last forever. However, by 1800, America had its first wood shortage (短缺). How did it happen? People had not known that trees were being cut down faster than new ones could grow.

Some American people made trips to foreign countries. There they saw destroyed forests and learnt the importance of protecting forests. They came back to the United States and warned that if Americans didn't use trees more carefully and wisely, someday the forests would all be gone. However, people were not ready to listen. Years went by, and America's forests kept disappearing. It made some people really worried. But they did nothing.

Finally, J. Sterling Morton, the man who is remembered as the father of Arbor Day (过节), got people to listen. He named a Tree-Planting Day, or Arbor Day. He worked hard to make Arbor Day a national holiday. On that day, people usually plant a lot of trees.

Today, millions of trees have been planted in the United States because of Arbor Day. Arbor Day is such a good idea that many other countries now also have Arbor Day. Many, many trees are being planted all over the world because of J. Sterling Morton's work.

We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way)                 BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud)            IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

    info (information)                  puter (computer)

    pic (picture)                       sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流) on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

:-) (happy)    ;-)  (joking)   :-(  (sad)       :-O  (surprised)

These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:

There are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the person.

It takes time for people to get used to(适应) e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.
