Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!

He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some officers often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she tries another term. One of the persons who don't support her says, “During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!” That's true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.''

Advertisers will sometimes use half—truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. ”It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of thing happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

(1)、We may infer that the author believes people should ________.
A、buy lottery tickets if possible B、make use of half—truths C、be careful about what they are told D、not trust the Yucky Company
(2)、How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?
A、One B、Two C、Three D、Four
(3)、Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A、Using half truths is against the law. B、Technically, half truths are in fact lies. C、Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache. D、Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.
(4)、Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A、He's really a big loser! B、Sometimes the truth can lie. C、Advertisers will sometimes use half truths. D、It's against the law to make false statements.

A hobby can be almost anything that a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists raise pets, watch birds, paint pictures, play the piano and grow flowers. They also go to concerts, climb mountains, go fishing, skate and swim. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from boxes to stamps.

People follow hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even make money by following a hobby. Hobbies help people relax after hard work, and provide a balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who are retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, can follow an interesting hobby.

Hobbies can also help a patient to keep healthy. Doctors have found that hobbies are useful in helping patients (病人) recover from illness. Hobbies give patients who can't move around something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat (治疗) patients by having them take up interesting hobbies. Anyone, old or young, sick or well, rich or poor, can follow a good hobby, in spite of his age, health or money.

In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had spare time did enjoy hobbies. People today have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines have now reduced much time that people must spend on their jobs. More people retire at an earlier age than before. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their newly-found free time hours.

Sir William Osler, a famous Canadian doctor expressed the value of hobbies by saying, “No man is really happy or safe without a hobby. ”

An atlas is-a book of maps. Atlases are made with different kinds of information about different parts and areas of a country or the world. They are prepared for desk use or travel use.

Desk atlases are made for different groups of people with different needs. For example, students may use desk atlases to help learn Geography, and other people may use desk atlases to study a place. A popular type of the latest atlas shows the recent fact of the world. New atlases are often carefully produced to help people learn about the changes, such as name changes, boundary(界) changes and other important new information. A desk atlas can also have some different maps of the same place. For example, an atlas may include maps showing population and important products of a place.

Travel atlases usually show the information about both natural and man-made features(特点). So it is not surprising to find universities, airports, forests, rivers, roads as well as cities, towns and villages in them. A travel atlas is often the first thing people need when they want to start a trip in a strange place.

It often has a map of a whole country, and a map with more special information of each important place in the country. Take the atlas of the United States as an example, it often has a map of the whole country and then a map of each of the fifty states.

A travel atlas may also point out the beautiful natural places. In the USA, the atlas may include national parks such as the Yellowstone National Park and some others to show the beauty of nature and interesting places to tourists.
