My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的)soil, my handsblackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad aroundin the garden, I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机)ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dadloved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almostas big as me, rows of yellow com, and our favorite — red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn'tget so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land ofpossibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, hislove for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and hadstarted families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Evenwhen he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convincedme that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rowsof multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply letthem be. He only planted tomatoes.
For the first few years after he died,I couldn't even bear to look at anyone's garden without having strong memoriespour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plantmy own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, afterbreaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the comer of my eye and Ihad to smile, It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in thefreshly tilled soil.

When we say older people shrink,we don't mean they become tiny enough to fit in your pocket! We just mean that it's common for older people to become a little shorter over time. This kind of shrinking can't be stopped, although people can slow this process. But why does shrinking happen at all?

Because of gravity, cushions between the bones in the spine(脊骨)get compressed(压缩),which makes a person lose a little height and become shorter.

Another reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis(骨质疏松).Osteoporosis occurs when bone is broken down and not enough new bone material is made.Over time, bone is said to be lost.Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured.

Older people—especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with—are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by,a person with osteoporosis can get small breaks in bones that are called compression fractures. These breaks cause collapse of the spine and over time the person with osteoporosis can become hunched over(驼背).

Did you know that every day you shrink a little, too? You aren't as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. That's because as the day goes on,water in the disks of the spine gets compressed due to gravity, making you just a tiny bit shorter.Don't worry, though.Once you get a good night's rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you're standing tall again!

Smoking and drinking alcohol can make this problem worse.Want to do something right now to build strong bones?I believe what I say will help you.

Insects(昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein(蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.

Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!

Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.

But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy. They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.

Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they will still have a lot work to do.
