What is the Internet?

The Internet is a large, world-wide collection (聚集) of computer networks( 网络). A network is a small group of computers put together. The Internet is many different kinds of networks from all over the world. These networks are called the Internet. If you have learned to use the Internet, you can have a lot of interest on the World Wide Web(网)

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web has been the most popular development of the Internet. The Web is like a big electronic (电子) book with millions of pages. These pages are called homepages. You can find information about almost anything in the world on these pages. For example, you can use the Internet instead of a library to find information for your homework. You can also find information about your favourite sport or film star, talk to your friends or even do some shopping on the pages. Most pages have words, pictures and even sound or music.

What is e-mail?

Electronic mail (e-mail) is a way of sending messages to other people. It' s much quicker and cheaper than sending a letter. If you want to use e-mail, you must have an e-mail address. This address must have letters and dots (点) and an" @ " (means "at"). For example: Lily @ Yahoo, com. Write a message, type a person's e-mail address, then send the message across the Internet. People don't need to use stamps, envelopes  or go to the post office since the invention of the Internet . Quick, easy and interesting — that' s the Internet .

    Goal(射门)! Football, or soccer, is one of the world's most popular sports. The game first came from old China, though the modern football game began on the streets of old England. The rule is simple: get the ball in the other team's goal, not using your hands or arms. With simple rules and easy equipment(设备), people can play football anywhere. But the game needs teamwork.

    The men's game came into the Olympics at the 1900 Paris Games in France. The women's game came into the Olympics at the 1996 Atlanta Games in Georgia. At the Olympics, players play for two 45-minute halves, with 11 players on each team.

    At the Olympics, we make 16 men's and 12 women's teams into groups of four teams. Each team plays against every other team in their group. The best eight teams in the men's and women's competitions move onto the quarterfinals. In the end the best one will become the winner of the game.

    There have been many great inventions that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things.

    Then in the early 1800's the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore(探测) much anymore. They began to work to make life better.

    In the second half of the 19th century, many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

    The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter in1907, movies with sound in 1923, the computer in 1927, and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon(尼龙)came in 1937. It changed the kind of clothes people wear. 

    By this time most people had a very good life, and man has a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

    New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.
