RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY

    When I arrived in Hamburg Germany, my colleague who worked there arranged a welcome party for me in a 1. We noticed a few customers including several old ladies, were having their meal. When a dish is  2, the waiter would distribute the food for them, and they would 3every bit of the food on their plates.

    As I was hungry, my local colleague 4much food for me. Since there were other things to do, we did not  5 much time dining. When we planned to leave, there was still about one third of  6food left. When we were leaving the restaurant, we 7someone calling us. When the old ladies spoke to us in English, we understood that they were 8about us wasting so much food.

    “We  9for our food; it is none of your  10no matter how much food we left behind”, my colleague told the old ladies. They got angry, and one of them  11made a call to someone. After a while, an officer in  12arrived. Upon finding what had happened, he issued us a 50-euro  13. The officer told us in a stern（严厉的）voice: “order 14 you can consume. Money is yours, 15the resources belong to the society. You have no  16 for wasting them.” Our face turned red.

    We all agreed with him in our 17. My colleague took out a 50-euro note and repeatedly  18to the officer.

    My colleague copied the fine ticket and gave a copy to each of us as a souvenir. We all 19it to remind us that we should never be 20.

    The Fitting-in of Suzy Khan

    The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. She was really small for her age of 12. The boy in my class often1about her and laughed their heads off. She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page.

    All I knew was that she was an orphan(孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who2that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with American kids. I looked down at this 3girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.

    But how could I help her4in with us? There had to be a5

    One day, when I went into the classroom, I saw that Suzy had6her geography book to a picture of a train, and in her notebook, she had made a(n)7copy.

    I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming 8show. So, I took her to see the art teacher, Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had 9"Why, it's wonderful," said Miss Parker, who then showed us a poster she had painted10the talent show. "I need more of these, but I just don't have enough11Could you help me, Suzy?"

    On the day of the talent show, Suzy's12were everywhere—all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.

    "And finally," said Mr. Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, "we have a(n)13award. I'm sure you've all noticed the wonderful posters." Everyone nodded. "One of our own students14them."

    I could hear everyone whispering. "Who in our school could draw15well?"

    Mr. Brown waited a while before saying, "16this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a17 too. Our mystery(神秘) artist is our new student—Suzy Khan!"

    Mr. Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist's set. "Thank you," she cried.

    Everyone started to20their hands. Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile and the applause was deafening. I knew then Suzy was going to be all right.

The Change of Bossy (好指挥人的) Lily

    I am a helpful person. However, my classmates used to call me “Bossy Lily”.

    One day, the class shouted again, “Bossy Lily, bossy Lily!” My teacher, Ms. Flora sent me to sit in the 1 for a while to quiet the class. I didn't understand why the class got 2 when I tried to show Mike how to handle the record player. I was only trying to 3 I also couldn't understand why the teacher had sent me to the corner. I was taught to always help my 4if they didn't know something. I thought the class was 5 in their judgment of me. I thought the teacher was wrong in 6 with them.

    When everyone was excused for break, Ms. Flora kept me in. I 7 I was in serious trouble, but I still didn't understand how my 8 could have caused the teacher to react like this.

     “Why am I here and not at break?” I asked Ms. Flora. The teacher didn't say a word.9 she placed a word puzzle in front of me. Surprised as I was, I got out my pencil and 10 to solve it. It was 11 with many words I didn't understand. I raised my hand for help, but Ms. Flora 12 me. I 13 with the word puzzle until I was about to give up. But I was not a quitter, so I stayed with the challenge. Soon I had solved the problem 14my own. I was so proud I did the puzzle by myself that I raised my hand high to get Ms. Flora's 15. Ms. Flora picked up the finished puzzle and 16.

    “I'm glad that you learned this important 17 from me.” I was 18. She hadn't done anything. Now she was taking the credit for my hard work!

    “Now perhaps you have learned to let other students make discoveries 19. After all, that is the fun of 20.”

    In that moment, I decided that I would never do anything that would cause them to call me “Bossy Lily” ever again.

    When Pat Jones finished college, she decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could1she was young. Pat wanted to visit Latin America2, so she got a job3an English teacher in a school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish4she was able to communicate with her students even when they didn't5much English.

    "I'm sorry, Miss Jones. That's19I slept so terribly. I didn't20a word they said. It was a nightmare (噩梦 )!"

    In my childhood, there were no smart phones or computers. Still, I never felt bored. The field, 1 and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby2 and walking slowly around it. At the back of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tyre tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but 3 it still seemed like a fine adventure.

    I4 on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was 5 in my ears to turn around and6back home but I was7 and even a bit stupid, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house 8. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew 9.     I continued to walk on with the fear growing inside of me. My heart was 12 and my legs were aching. When I 13 one last corner and saw a house that I 14 , I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away, but 15 felt like feathers. I 16 into the house with a big smile just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night's sleep.

    I remembered this recently when I saw a 17 that said, "All roads lead home". This is true. I also remembered a sage (圣人) compared life to a journey. Are we going to make this life a terrible 18 or are we going to make the life a joyful one? It 19 our own choice.
