What Would You Do? is a TV program on American ABC. The program which is hosted by the news reporter John Quinones is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble so as to remind us to stand up for the people in need. Here is last week's program. In a cake shop, two actors acted as a blind woman named Pamela and a man clerk who looked down upon the blind. Hidden cameras were recording what would happen. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cup cakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated her when he gave her the change. He only gave her 6 single dollar bills instead of 34 dollars. |

Moving out, moving back
In the countries all over the world, people are leaving the countryside in large numbers to find jobs in the cities. They leave because the countryside is much poorer than the city and often there isn't much work there. Services such as hospital and transport are usually much better in cities than they are in the country. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.
But in the big cities of Europe and America-London. Pairs, New York, people are moving out of the city. These are usually families who have some money, and want to live a quieter life. They are tired of the noise and the dirt of the city, tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} They want a house with a garden, and clean air that isn't polluted.
So they move out. Some don't go very far, just a little way out of the city, to the towns near the cities. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.
There are sheep and cows and green fields! There, they start a new life and try to make new friends.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#} After two or three years, many people who have done this feel that it was a big mistake. They don't make so much money and there isn't much to do. The people there are very different and aren't always very friendly. .{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}
More land will be used for building new towns and houses for all the people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Instead, people will eat more fruit and vegetables. In this way, people may be healthier.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Only about 29%of the Earth's area is land and the rest is sea, so some think maybe we can get more food from the sea.
Besides, though rice supports more than half the world's population, it needs a lot of water to grow. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Therefore, it might be impossible to grow rice in the future. Some farmers are experimenting with new crops. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}The soybean (黄豆) makes a good substitute (替代品) for rice and meat.
A. Maybe no one will eat it every day. B. Scientists predict (预测) the climate will get drier during the next century. C. Scientists are always trying out new ways of growing food. D. Farmers like to grow beans because they don't need much water, and beans also improve the quality of the soil. E. As the population is growing fast, there must be changes in our food. |
