Florence Nightingale was named after her birthplace, Florence, Italy. When she was almost a year old, she returned with her family to England.

Florence often helped her mother deliver(运送) food to the poor and sick. Her family was shocked because nursing was not a respected profession.

But Florence was determined. She studied books on medicine. Later, she visited hospitals in France, Germany and Ireland and learned everything she could.

In 1854, Britain was at war with Russia. Florence went to the British hospital in Scutari (now Üsküdar in Istanbul) and she was shocked. The hospital left men lying on the floor, and rats were running everywhere. Many soldiers died before receiving help.

The doctors wouldn't listen to Florence because they didn't like the idea of women in army hospitals—until one day 500 unexpected casualties(伤亡者) arrived. Florence made changes, making sure the men were washed and their injuries were cared for. Every night she would check the patients with her lamp.

When she returned home after the war, a fund had been set up in her honor. Many of the soldiers she had nursed had made contributions(捐款).Now she could set up the Nightingale Training School in London.

After years of hard work, Florence Nightingale saw cleaner and more cheerful hospitals. All of this was because of the "lady with the lamp".

A.Nursing became an honored profession.

B.There was no running water and no heat.

C.She knew she had much to learn about nursing.

How to Avoid an Internet Addiction

It may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. But if you can't have interest in other aspects of your life because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you're the only one who has experienced that feeling. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Set aside limited time for computer use.

Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.

Use an alarm clock or timer(计时器).

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A. The truth, though, is that it's quite common to be an addict.

B. When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.

C. Being addicted to it is quite normal.

D. Admit you are at risk of an addiction.

E. If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.

F. This will stop you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.

G. This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.
