From the first day I arrived in Kunming, I had my understanding of China (change). Far from being narrow-minded and hostile to (foreign), people came up to talk to me the first time I went out on the street. It happened to be all in Chinese, so I didn't understand much, it did cause me to rethink my assumptions.

As my Chinese improved, this continued throughout my stay, from my landlord introducing me to people who could help us learn Chinese to (get) to know the couple who ran a noodle restaurant nearby.

If you're interested in other people, their culture, and their language, they'll be(friend) to you. China isn't exception.

Don't judge a country by its media coverage, (especial) some Western media, which have much prejudice.

I saw a very different kind of China with my own eyes. Kunming,  I lived for most of my stay, wasn't much polluted. I had frank conversations with Chinese people about almost everything.

Still China (develop), but the economic growth means that most people (see) their living standards improve rapidly in the last 20 years. People I spoke with were generally optimistic about the future.

I won't call myself the most accomplished person when it comes to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (hold) chopsticks. In fact, I'm pretty sure that my technique looks clumsy at times. I tend to hold {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (I) in the middle, more like beginner than expert.

Still, since I eat almost every meal with the eating utensil (器皿) of choice in China, it's not uncommon for a new friend or acquaintance to come to a simple {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (conclude) after observing me that my Chinese husband, Jun, must have shown me {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to use them before.

They are wrong. I've used chopsticks ever since I was a teenager, a time when my sister and mother were both fond of Chinese cuisine and introduced me {#blank#}5{#/blank#} many new dishes, along with the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (prefer) utensils in China. We always kept bamboo chopsticks along with our {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (knife), forks and spoons, ready for whenever we happened to have Chinese food for dinner. It was my closest family {#blank#}8{#/blank#} observed my first mistakes I made in using chopsticks.

Plus, I lived over two years in China before Jun and I started dating and I {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (expect) to use chopsticks in almost every restaurant, stand and bar. Trust me, when you're hungry you figure out pretty fast what it takes to down (咽下) {#blank#}10{#/blank#} meal with these utensils.

When Robert Lee was in primary school, he hated to see his classmates throwing away half-eaten sandwiches after lunch. His parents had taught him and his older brother not to waste food. “They said it was bad,” says Robert, 27.

While {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (study) finance and accounting at New York University, Robert remembered this lesson and joined Two Birds One Stone, a food rescue club at school {#blank#}2{#/blank#}delivered, five days a week, uneaten pasta, vegetables and other leftovers (剩余食物) from the dining hall to nearby homeless {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (shelter).

When Robert and fellow club member Louisa Chen entered a college {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (compete), they came up with a slightly different idea for a food rescue non-profit group—{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (it) program wouldn't have a donation minimum, would operate seven days a week, and would be staffed {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (entire) by volunteers.

Surprisingly, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} idea stood out. Robert and Louisa Chen won the first place. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the $1,000 prize, they founded Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) in July 2013. In just the first few weeks, Robert steam delivered a donation of enough noodles and meatballs to feed 20 people in line at a New York City homeless shelter that had run out of food. Only a year into his finance job, Robert gave up his six- figure salary {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (focus) on RLC. So far the organization {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (reach) sixteen cities around the country.
