There are two main things that make aircraft engineering difficult: the need to make every component as reliable as possible and the need to build everything as light as possible. The fact that an airplane is up in the air and can't stop if anything goes wrong, makes it perhaps a matter of life or death that its performance is completely dependable.

Given a certain power of engine, and consequently a certain fuel consumption, there is a practical limit to the total weight of aircraft that can be made to fly. Out of that weight as much as possible is wanted for fuel, radio navigational instruments, passenger seats, or freight room, and of course, the passengers or freight themselves. So the structure of the aircraft has to be as small and light as safety and efficiency will allow. The designer must calculate the normal load that each part will bear. This specialist is called the "stress man." He takes notice of any unusual stress that may be put on the part as a precaution against errors in manufacture, accidental damage etc.

The stress man's calculations go to the designer of the part, and he must make it as strong as the stress man says is necessary. One or two small parts are always tested to prove that they are as strong as the designer intended. Each separate part is tested, then a whole assembly—for example, a complete wing, and finally the whole aeroplane. When a new type of aeroplane is being made, normally only one of the first three made will be flown. Two will be destroyed on the ground in strict tests. The third one will be tested in the air.

When a plane has passed all the tests it can get a government certificate of airworthiness, without which it is illegal to fly, except for test flying.

Making the working parts reliable is as difficult as making the structure strong enough. The flying controls, the electronic equipment, the fire precautions, etc. must not only be light in weight, but must work both at high altitudes where the temperature may be below freezing point and in the hot air of an airfield in the tropics.

To solve all these problems the aircraft industry has a large number of research workers, with elaborate laboratories and test houses, and new materials to give the best strength in relation to weight are constantly being tested.

(1)、The two main requirements of aircraft design are ____.
A、Speed and cost B、Reliability and passenger comfort C、Lightness and dependability D、Ability to stay up in the air and reliability
(2)、The maximum possible weight of an aircraft is determined by ______.
A、The engine power B、the amount of freight room C、The number of passengers D、international regulations
(3)、The first three aeroplanes of a new type _____.
A、are only for show B、are all destroyed C、are later broken up for square parts D、are used for testing purposes
(4)、All equipment in an aircraft must _____.
A、be tested to destruction B、not be too light in weight C、work especially well at high temperatures D、work perfectly within a wide range of temperatures

Work started this week on next season's flu vaccine (疫苗), with experts working off forecasts about which types of the flu virus will be making the rounds. But don't expect any improvements. Flu experts are already admitting that most vaccines will give at best basic protection, because they're based on old-fashioned technology. It's not a new problem, but one that the slow-moving world of drug and vaccine production seems helpless to improve upon.

Every flu vaccine is a cocktail, aimed at either three or four of the most common flu types. Flu vaccines must be recreated every year because flu viruses develop constantly in a process called antigenic drift. In February, global flu experts gather to trade notes on what viruses are circulating in different countries and to come to an agreement on which types the next vaccines should be made to target.

In recent years, flu vaccines have been based on H1N1, H3N2 and either one or two types of influenza B virus. Each of these has a "reference" type, which is used to make seed virus. Producers add the seed types to eggs and incubate (孵) them as the virus grows. Then they purify the virus, and either weaken it or kill it to make a vaccine.

Using eggs is a tricky (=difficult) and unpredictable process. Sometimes the virus doesn't grow well in eggs, which can mean less vaccine than expected. The result is a flu vaccine that doesn't offer much protection. "As long as we have eggs we are going to have this problem," said Scott Hensley, a flu virus expert, "The only solution is not to depend on eggs."

Flu is a major killer. The 2017-2018 season has been a severe one, hitting the entire U. S. with widespread influenza infection (感染) at once for weeks on end, and killing 97 children so far. Against this threat, even a less satisfying flu vaccine will definitely help. "Even when you have these mismatches it will not prevent infection but likely prevent disease severity," said Hensley.

In many ways, Providence Mount St. Vincent in Seattle is a typical senior living community. It is home to about 400 elderly people and provides them with different types of assistance. However, it is also the Inter-generational Learning Center—a preschool where children and seniors have the chance to bond(结成友好的关系).

Established in 1991, the ILC's purpose is to allow kids to learn about acceptance while also being nurtured. It also aims to help seniors develop a greater sense of self-worth and strengthen social interactions. Babies to prekindergarten-aged children are placed into six different classes at the ILC. The kids attend art and music classes, as well as story time and exercise time with the seniors. Marie Hoover, ILC director, said that interacting with the seniors has proven beneficial for the young ones, making them more open-minded.

“For the ILC children, interacting with the residents is simply part of their day-to-day life here and the way aging is 'normalized', which may be the most important benefit they receive,” Hoover said.“ I've had parents call me years after their children have graduated from our program to let me know about some incidents when their child was the first to warmly greet someone who happened to be in a wheelchair.”

As for the seniors, they're delighted by the companionship the children provide. The children bring so much energy and joy to our residents. Many of residents are widows or widowers and can become lonely. Their adult children may still be working, so they may not get to see them as often as they would like. Having the children stay with the old makes our residents feel they are still part of a community. The young and the old connect and learn from one another at this unique facility.

Have you ever been faced with trying to stay positive when others around you are negative? A negative person can bring you down and throw your positive plans out of the window. Whether you deal with a family member, friend or co-worker who is negative, there are things you can do to remain positive in the face of negativity?

Whatever you do, don't argue with a negative person. Arguing only adds fuel to the fire. I have noticed when my children are crabby, it is best to avoid trying to convince them to analyze and adjust their attitude. As soon as I take the approach of being in opposition to them, the situation gets worse before it gets better. Sometimes the best thing to do is remain silent and let negativity pass.

You know how difficult it can be to give love and positive attention to negative people. Unfortunately, that is often exactly what they need. A negative person is usually afraid he is unlovable. How do you show love when someone is negative? You must listen to what he is trying to tell you. Acknowledge the feelings he has by saying something like, “You sound very angry right now.” How might you help a negative person? Offer a hug even if you get rejected. A negative person often has difficulty accepting love from others.

If you have negative people on your life who are affecting your mental and physical health, you need to decide whether or not you want these people in your life. Some people are so negative that you have no other choice but to remove them from your life. However, some people, such as your children, are difficult to remove from your life, in this case, professional counseling(咨询) may be the answer.
