    At the back of King's College there is a memorial stone in white marble to honor the Chinese poet Xu Zhimo. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (move) to the UK in 1921, Zhimo spent a year studying at King's where he {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (fall) in love not only with the romantic poetry of English poets like John Keats, but also with Cambridge {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (it).

    His poem, Second Farewell to Cambridge, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} is considered to be his most famous one, is now a compulsory text on Chinese literature, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (learn) by millions of school children across our country every year. Old English is very different from Modern English and difficult for the 21st­century English speakers to understand.

    For the 300 years following the Norman Conquest in 1066, the Norman kings and the nobility spoke only a {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(vary) of French called Anglo­Norman. English continued to be the language of the common people. The Norman influence {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(strong) the continual evolution of the language over the following centuries, resulting in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} is now referred to as Middle English. And one of the best­known works from the Middle English period is Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.

    From the late 15th century, the language changed into Early Modern English, often dated from the Great Vowel Shift. English is continuously absorbing foreign words, especially Latin and Greek, causing English to have the largest vocabulary of any language in the world. By the late 18th century, the British Empire had sped the spread of English through its colonies and geopolitical dominance. Commerce, science and technology, diplomacy, art and formal education all contributed to English {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (become) the first truly global language. As there are many words from different languages, the risk of mispronunciation is high. In 1755, Samuel Johnson published his A Dictionary of the English Language, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} introduced a standard set of spelling conventions and usage norms.

    China's Chang'e 5 mission {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (successful) delivered samples of moon rocks and dust to Earth on December 17, 2020. It marks {#blank#}2{#/blank#} first time in 44 years that moon rocks have been brought back to our planet.

    The sample capsule landed in Inner Mongolia {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a little after 2:00 a.m. Thursday local time. The drop-off was the ending of a 23-day mission that began on November 23, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} China sent up Chang'e 5 from a site on Hainan Island. The mission's goal was {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (collect) at least four pounds of material and bring it back to Earth.

    The material collected by Chang'e 5 was from a site in the northwest region of the moon's near side. This area was formed more recently, and the rocks here {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (think) to be only about 1.2 billion years old now. That means scientists {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(study) the material could learn more about the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (evolve) of the moon.

Although Chang'e 5 was a short mission, it was one of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (complex) projects undertaken by the Chinese space program so far. The country is far from done with the moon—Chang'e 6, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (it) second lunar sample return, is ready to launch in 2023 or 2024.
