Old English differs much from the English we use today. Middle English is the name given to the English used from around the 12^th {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the 15^th centuries. Many things played a part in the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (develop) of this new type of English. The most important contribution was from the Normans, a French-speaking people who  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (defeat) England and took control of the country in 1066. However, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as much as the Angels and the Saxons'victory about 600 years earlier, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} led to old English replacing Celtic. Even though the Normans spoke French for the entire 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English as the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (one) language. On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (many) words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French). Modern English appeared during the Renaissance in the 16th century.  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (pronounce) also went through huge changes during this period. Of course, this was not the end of the changes in the English language. The question of whether English will keep on changing in the future is {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (easily) to answer. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} is certain that this process will continue, and people will keep {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (invent) new words and new ways of saying things.

In China, a site that amazed me was one {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (provide) by nature—the Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River, the mother river of the country.

    The Yellow River was a main source of transportation in the past. Many ports and bridges were built and destroyed by the river's strong current(水流), and it was {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (challenge) for the locals back then to build a bridge {#blank#}3{#/blank#} was strong enough to withstand(承受) the current of the Yellow River.

    About 1,500 years ago, the locals of Puzhou, which is now Yongji,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (make) several iron oxen anchors, each {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (weigh) more than seventy metric tons to hold a floating bridge across the Yellow River. It was amazing to see these{#blank#}6{#/blank#} person and I was astonished by the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (wise) and workmanship of people back then.

    The hotels that {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (arrange) for us to stay in were among the best in each city we visited, which sums up {#blank#}9{#/blank#} China was shown to me, with sights both beautiful and amazing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} kind and helpful people.

    There are all kinds of festivals throughout the world. Festivals are held {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (satisfy) and please the ancestors, to honour some famous people or important events, and to express people's {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(grateful) to the God {#blank#}3{#/blank#} brings them a year of plenty. For example, Japanese observe Obon, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} people go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. In India, October 2 is {#blank#}5{#/blank#} national festival to honour Mohandas Gandhi who helped India become an {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(depend) country.

    And in China the Spring Festival, which {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(celebrate) in January or February, is the most {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(energy) and important because it is a festival that looks forward to the coming of spring. Why are all these festivals everywhere? Because {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the festivals, people can get together to eat, drink, have fun with each other {#blank#}10{#/blank#} forget all the daily struggle and demands for a while.

    Questioning can lead to searching for an answer. If we are in the habit of asking whether that we are told is true, we can find the correct answer and learn more.

    Two years ago, our teacher, Mr. Alex offered us an answer of a difficult math problem in class. Because the answer seemed a little strange, nobody but I doubted it. Thought that his solution might be wrong, I carefully analyzed the problem and try to work it out in a different way. Half a hour later, I managed to find the correct answer. When I showed my answer to her, the teacher praised me for my dependent thinking.

    From this experience I have been learnt that questioning can serve as a bridge helps us to seek the truth.

   It was already late when we started for the next town, which, according to the map, was about fifteen miles away on the other side of the hill. There we felt sure that we  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(find) a bed for the night. Soon darkness fell after we left the village,   {#blank#}2{#/blank#} unluckily we met no one when we drove fast along the narrow(狭窄的)road which  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(lead)to the hill. As our car climbed {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (high), it became colder and the rain began to fall, making it difficult  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(see)the road.

   After we had traveled for about twenty miles, there was still no sign(迹象)of the town which was  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(poor)marked on the map. We were beginning to get anxious when the car suddenly stopped. A quick {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(examine) showed that we had used up(用完)the gas. Although we had little food left, we decided to spend the night in the car.  

   With our meals {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(finish), I tried to go to sleep at once, but John, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} was a poor sleeper, got out of the car after a few minutes and went  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a walk up the hill. There, he found the lights of the town in a valley below.
