    A good laugh is like a mild workout (锻炼). It exercises the muscles, gets the blood flowing, decreases blood pressure and improves sleep patterns and the immune system.

    Don't take life too seriously. We all have obstacles in life and we all make mistakes. In fact, if you can laugh light-heartedly at your own fault, you'll find that you give yourself that extra happiness and confidence increase that can get you over any obstacle.

    Find the humor in a bad situation. Sure, there are some situations where you are really sad. The next time you feel the stress levels rising, take a minute to think about the funny side of the situation and laugh over the things you cannot control. This will lower your blood pressure, blood sugar levels and heart rate.

    Remind yourself of funny moments from the past. Perhaps a friend told you a great joke the other day or your children or pets did something amusing. Sometimes just reliving (重温,再次体验) a funny moment can cause the endorphins(内啡肽), natural painkillers, to kick in.

    As the saying goes, laughter is contagious(会传染的). So make a point of (重视) seeking out positive people who aren't afraid to laugh at themselves and are good at finding humor in life's situations. Young children are especially skilled at finding laughter and joy in everyday moments.

    If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills.

    Make friends with American students. Many international students end up making friends with a lot of—or only—other international students.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information.

    Learn from American friends. Tell your American friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you. If you pronounce a word incorrectly, or misuse an idiom, you ask them to guide you. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Increase your knowledge. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you have been exposed to topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} If you have to explain something to someone, you have a strong motivation to pronounce everything as well as you can, and find other ways to explain yourself. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I owe most of it to my years of being a math teacher in college for years.

A. It is bad for them to do that.

B. You will make progress this way.

C. If possible, become a teacher at your school.

D. It's a win-win opportunity for international students.

E. Keep up with news and watch popular shows and movies.

F. Explaining everything in a different way counts.

G. You may have trouble in listening and speaking in the language, however.

Not all English is the same

    To many learners of English, it's easy to think that all native speakers have no trouble communicating with one another.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Well, it turns out that being a native English speaker from one country doesn't mean that you're able to perfectly understand a native English speaker from another country, and vice versa (反之亦然)

    Take the UK and the US for example.

    As a Briton, I grew up hearing American accents alongside British ones – on TV shows, movies and in songs.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} and how they would eat “cookies” instead of “biscuits”.  And it took me a while to figure out that the “trunk” (n. 后备箱) of a car is what us Britons call its “boot”.

    The confusion didn't stop at just vocabulary –{#blank#}3{#/blank#} For example, when talking about shopping malls, Americans pronounce it “mawl” instead of “mal”. And for some reason that's hard for Britons to understand, Americans remove the “H” sound from “herb”, pronouncing it “erb”.

    These small differences may not change much in a day-to-day conversation between a Briton and an American.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Recently, for example, an American friend told me that she liked my pants. “You can see them?” I asked, shocked. Pants means “underpants” to most British people, which explains my horror.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} In the US, for example, a “bum” is a homeless person, while the same word in the UK is used to describe one's backside(n.臀部).

    And, more amusingly, “trump” was only ever really used as a verb in the UK – meaning “to pass gas” – until the US' current president came into the spotlight.

But as long as you can speak one version of English, it's easy enough to understand any other – and any confusion just makes your day more interesting.

A. English is changing as it spreads around the world.

B. After all, English is English, isn't it?

C. I soon noticed how Americans would put “gas” in their cars instead of “petrol” .

D. However, confusion can still happen every now and then.

E. There are different words that mean the difficult thing.

F. Some words can even be offensive (adj.无礼的) without you realizing it.

G. I discovered that many words are even pronounced differently.

    If your family is thinking of getting a pet, consider adopting from an animal shelter, where all animals are in need of loving homes. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Here are some tips for you to find great animals.

    Make some decisions.

    Think about what you want in a pet and remember that all pets have different personalities. Cats tend to be more independent, but kittens need lots of attention. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} However, they are usually great companions and love to spend time with their family.

    Visit the shelter.

     {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Remember that you may need to visit more than one shelter, or you may need to make more than one visit. Try to bring along everyone who will be living with the new pet. Ask the shelter staff lots of questions. And never adopt an animal because you feel sorry for it—be patient so you can find a pet who is truly a good match for your family.

     {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Buy all necessary supplies and food well before the animal comes home. Make sure that the entire household is in agreement about rules and responsibilities—will the dog be allowed on the couch? Who will clean the litter-box? Put it in writing before the pet arrives.

    Bring your new friend home!

    You'll probably be excited when your new pet arrives, but be sure to give it space and time to get adjusted to a new home and a new family. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Interact with your pet a lot and get it used to a routine, and soon you'll be one big happy family!

A. Get everything ready

B. Both cats and dogs are human's good partners.

C. Dogs need to be walked at least twice a day.

D. The pet may act differently once they leave the shelter.

E. Set aside at least a few hours to visit shelters in your area.

F. Put away the garbage cans.

G. Some may come with emotional or behavioral issues, but most are happy, healthy, and ready for a loving home.
