Why people collect art

    Many people through history have gone to great lengths to collect art. But what motivates these collectors?

    One popular explanation for collecting is that they can have financial gain. Some resell works, earning enormous profit.  Immorally, some 'collectors' buy art as a form of money laundering(洗钱), since it is far easier to move art than cash between counties without examination.

     For them, art is important for other reasons. The best way to understand the underlying drive of art collecting is as a means to create and strengthen social bonds, and as a way for collectors to communicate within these new networks.

Collectors are not only interested in creating social links; they are also motivated by the messages they can send once these social networks are created. We all know art is a powerful way for the artist to express thoughts and feelings. Displaying art can send a message about who the collector really is — at least who she sees herself as.

     Through the collections, collectors convey messages not just about themselves, but about the world as a whole. For example, the kid with the shoebox of bird feathers might show others her collection not just to make friends, but also to convince them about the importance of protecting endangered species.

    People collect art for various reasons.

A. Some gain art works in an illegal way.

B. But most collectors think little of profit.

C. Artworks preserve the qualities of their makers.

D. No doubt art collection is a hard addiction to overcome.

E. Some get large tax reductions for donating art to museums.

F. It also serves as an effective way to express collectors.

G. Other art collectors see their collections as having a broader power.

Why you shouldn't punish your kids for lying

    Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.

    PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific: {#blank#}3{#/blank#} and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day. If you happen to "catch" your child in a lie, say something like, "That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home."

    MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.

    DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out). More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, k can be dramatically lessened.

A. It is not what that is, but about practice.

B. As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.

C. That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.

D. "That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked. Wow!"

E. Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.

F. "You did a good job, but what you said was not what I'd like to know!"

G. Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.

How to calm your teens

    A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

    Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen's work. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}What they look for is your presence - to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but don't let them focus on those fears.

    Help them get organized. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Together, you and your teen can work out a time-table in which she can study for what she knows will be on the test.

    Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy.

    Give them a nutritious diet. It's important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do her best. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Persuade your teenager to get some sleep and/or do something active when she needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise are all important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance her time so that she will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

    Show a positive attitude. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen's pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

A. Encourage your teen to relax.

B. The best thing is simply to listen.

C. They will only make the situation worse.

D. A parent's attitude will dictate their teen's emotions.

E. Exam stress can make some teens lose their appetite.

F. Your teen may also make negative comments about themselves

G. Help your teen think about what she has to study and plan accordingly.

    Coca-Cola is probably the most famous brand in the world. Although the company is trying to present itself as a health-conscious company, you can't really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} And we tell ourselves that it's all okay as long as we don't overdo it. However, Coca-Cola has other functions besides drinking.

    Cola removes the tarnish(暗锈) from old pennies. Got some old rusty pennies? Not to worry! {#blank#}2{#/blank#} When you get them out, you'll have shiny pennies that will look as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn't clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of cola and let it do its magic!

    You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you've got gum stuck in your hair and don't know a better way to get it out, don't worry, you won't have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on it inside. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}You probably know about this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint inside a two-liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-Cola explosion. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Don't eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a similar thing could happen to your stomach.

    Even if you love fish, actually cooking it in your kitchen can be a commitment. Long after the fish has been eaten, the pots washed, and the plates put in the dishwasher, the fish smell still exits.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Luckily, expert cooks have figured out how you can cook your fish without leaving a smell that exists for days.

    First off, know that truly fresh fish really shouldn't have much of an odor)气味)at all. So if you unwrap a package of fish and take a step back from the smell that greets you, throw it away because it's not fresh.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    A lot of the smell from cooking fish is because of the cooking method you use.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    However, other techniques, like cooking fish in paper, can put a lid on the problem before itstarts. Cleaning experts recommend minimizing the odor before cooking by bathing fish inmilk or a solution of lemon and water.

    If it's too late and your home is beginning to smell like the parking lot of a seafood joint, then Good Housekeeping suggests mixing together vinegar and water and letting it boil for several minutes to get rid of the smell.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Shut any inside doors to keep the smell from spreading throughout the house and into bedrooms, but open up kitchen windows and doors to allow the smell to get out. And be sure to wipe any spills and throw away any trash containing fish bits.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} And the resulting sweet scent will make everyone forget about any fishy odor.

A.Frying can cause a big smell problem

B.Prepare your home ahead of fish cooking time.

C.Here's how to make every room smell amazing.

D.Cooking fish wrong brings about terrible smells.

E.When all else fails, bake up some cookies for dessert.

F.But, admittedly, even the freshest fish can get a bit of smell once it's cooked.

G.It can be enough to put even the most devoted fish eater off cooking it regularly.
