Many of us have ever loved the two toy bears-a brown Teddy bear and a yellow Winnie-the-Pooh bear. The two toy bears come from real stories in life.

    In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, President of the USA, went on hunting. The hunting dogs found an old bear in the forest near Washington DC and the guide asked the president to shoot(射杀) it. But President Roosevelt disagreed. A cartoonist(漫画家) drew a cartoon showing that the president refused to shoot the bear. Soon, the bear began to appear in other newspapers. People named the bear Teddy which was Theodore's nickname(昵称).

    In 1913, a captain named Harry Colebourn paid 20 dollars for a black bear which was born in the Canadian countryside. The captain's hometown, Winnipeg, was the origin(起源) of the bear's name. In Winnipeg, Winnie served as the mascot(吉祥物). When World War I began, the captain went to France. Winnie was sent to London Zoo which many kids often visited. Because of its lovely look, the bear became popular with children.

    The life has been full of challenges and difficulties. Life is not about the smartest person or the strongest person, or even the richest person. However, life is about having the mind in your heart "Never Give Up", even when you feel that giving up is the only choice. The world is waiting on your gifts.

    You many feel that life is challenging you from time to time and you can't take it anymore. You may want to give up right now. But here is a thought, what will happen if you overcome the difficulties?

    When an Olympic runner is in a race, he or she is focusing on one thing - the finishing line. You have to focus on the big picture – not just where you are right now. Focus in where you want to be. Make an agreement with your mind and your mouth.

    One of my favorite poems is called "Crystal Stair" written by Langston Hughes. In that poem, a mother tells her son that life is tough, you will meet rocks and hard places, but the end is victory to those who stand their ground and ride the course.

    Whatever you are facing, you can make it through. There is a rainbow on the other side of your situation. Stay strong, stay focused and never give up.

    We spoke to three students from around the world about different national holidays. There are different customs (习俗) for each festival.

    “It'll soon be Chinese New Year. Before it, we'll clean the house and decorate it for good luck. Every shop is going to close for a few days and we'll go out a lot to celebrate in the streets. We might go and see the lion and dragon dances in the city center. I love this festival.”

    “Australia Day is on 26th January and it's an important holiday here. We always have a Monday off, so we celebrate for three days. My parents and I go to the countryside for a picnic and friends always come over. Many people go to beach parties or street parties and there's lots of music and dancing. What fun！”

    “The first Thanksgiving Day was hundreds of years ago when Europeans who came to America thanked God for his help. It's still a very important day for families to be together. This year we're going to visit my grandparents and we'll eat a delicious meal of turkey. Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday in November every year.”

    These days, a new kind of restaurant is becoming popular. People who go there can not only enjoy their meals, but also enjoy playing computer games and chatting on the Internet. Wink is the restaurant's name. It is in Los Angeles, and it's about fun and food.

    In Wink, there are no waiters or waitresses around you. The screens have replaced(取代)them. You can order the food you want by touching the screen in front of you and runners will bring it to the tables. You can also play video games with the people at the next table .The screens can show music videos, movies and so on. But mainly they are used to show video games.

    It's an interactive(互动的)restaurant where you will control your meal and your time. The service is fast and the runners know clearly where to go. There will be no waiting for a waiter and no misunderstandings(误解)in the kitchen. Different kinds of food are served at any time of the day. Wink is a place which hosts “room games”, where every table in the restaurant can have a video game competition at the same time.

    The owner of the restaurant hopes that Wink can make it easy for people to be interactive having fun and enjoying a delicious meal.

    Have you ever heard of a girl of15, who set up a company of her own? Wendy Wong is the girl. She started the business two years ago. She has already written several successful compute games. They are so popular that over half a million games are sold every year. Now all of her family work in her business, and she is still at school.

    She gets up early in the morning, and then she talks with her family about the business over breakfast. Every day she goes to school in her own car with a driver, for she is not old enough.

    She enjoys her school, but some of the work is too easy for her to feel interested. She usually gets 'A' grades in all her subjects, so the other students often ask her for help.

    She finished her homework in half an hour after her driver takes her home. After dinner, she goes to her office and goes on working on her computer, writing games until 2 am. She does not usually need so much sleep as other children.

    Started in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    In the early years, these schools were much alike. Only young men went to college. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Little was known about science then, and one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students graduated, most of them became ministers or teachers.

    In 1782, Harvard started a medical school for young men who wanted to become doctors. Later, lawyers could receive their training in Harvard's law school. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Soon it began teaching American history.

    As knowledge increased, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Today, there are many different kinds of colleges and universities. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} There's so much to learn that one kind of school can't offer it all.

A. In 1825. besides Latin and Greek, Harvard began teaching modern languages, such as French and German.
