Round the World

    Mr and Mrs Spencer both had very busy jobs and didn't have much time to spend with their young children. They wanted to change this, and because their hobby was boating, they decided to sail round the world together.

    It took six years to prepare everything for the trip. First, they bought a new boat. Then, both the husband and wife had to take advanced(先进的) sailing lessons and learn all about the sea and the weather. Mr Spencer also did several courses in repairing engines and Mrs Spencer spent an hour in a restaurant learning to cut up fish.

    In October, they had one year off from their jobs and sailed away from England with their two children. The next year, in August, their long journey ended in Australia.

    The boat was not big, but they took a teacher for the children with them. None of them found the trip boring because there were three computers, many CDs, a TV and a DVD player on the boat.

    The family loved being at the sea and seeing the stars in the sky. But, most of all, Mr and Mrs Spencer enjoyed spending time with their children while they were still young.

    Why should students play sports? Some people think that students play sports in order to get exercise. Others think it can help students have fun. But that is not enough. If students play sports, they can get more than healthy bodies. Why? Here are three more reasons.

    Students who play sports do better in school. Some people think that doing exercise will take up students' study time. But a recent study has shown that students who play sports get better scores in school than those who don't. Exercise gets students to learn, remember things and concentrate (集中注意力)better.
    Students who play sports develop their teamwork spirits and learn problem-solving skills. When they are working together with others to win games and reach goals, they're learning how to be successful in practice. And these skills will be useful to them for study or their future work.

    Playing sports can also improve confidence(自信). Students who play sports feel better about themselves. When they know they can improve and reach their goals by practicing, it builds their confidence.And sports can also help them communicate with others actively and make new friends.

    Mr Turner was a famous writer. He was born in New York in a rich family on 13th September, 1941. His father came from England. He was a worker. His mother came from Australia and she worked as a doctor.

    When Mr Turner was seven, he began to go to school. He usually rode his bicycle to school. At school, he first wanted to be a manager. But at the age of fifteen, he decided to be a writer. In 1965, he wrote his first book and in 1967 he wrote his second book. After that he was famous all over America.     English homework may be boring for many students. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Our English teacher, Mrs. Lin, asked us to write an English letter to ourselves in the future. Mrs. Lin said she got the idea from Steve Jobs' time capsule (时光胶囊). In 1983, Jobs buried his time capsule. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}That was 30 years later. So what will you write about to your future self? Everyone was surprised and whispered (窃窃私语) about it.

    " {#blank#}3{#/blank#} And write about how you will make your dream come true. Then you can bury the letter and wait for 20 years to open it again," Mrs. Lin told us.

    It was really interesting! {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Some would like to sing songs and become stars. In my letter, I wrote "I hope to be a doctor." I want to cure (治愈) people and I won't ask for much money, just like my dad.  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} For example I would read more books and learn two foreign languages in my twenties.

    Reading books is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons. First, reading books is fun. You can always keep yourself pleased if you like reading. This is especially useful when the weather is bad. It is a relaxing hobby, too. You can really become lost in a book.

    Next, you can read a book almost anywhere, in a car, in a waiting room, on a plane, in bed--even in a bath. All you need is a book. Reading is a convenient(方便的) hobby as it is easy to stop and then start again.

    Another good reason for reading books is that it is useful. If you keep reading as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. This means that you will read faster and will become better at understanding what you read. As your reading improves, you will probably find that your schoolwork becomes much easier. Many school subjects depend on(依靠) good reading and, as you read, you will learn more and more.

    Some people say, hat reading is out of date. That is not true. You have to be able to read on the Internet. And the more you read, the better your computer skills will be. Reading is hardly out of date!

    Good readers are most likely to be good writers, too. They are usually good at spelling as well, and have more things to write about.

    Reading books is a wonderful hobby, one of the best. What other hobbies could be more useful or more enjoyable?
