I listened and took notes and somewhere 14 the way my mother turned into a professor. She was so good a professor that I got completely15 in the subject matter and forgot that my mother was the person lecturing.

That summer school session passed quickly. Did the other students in the class ever learn my secret? Well, yes they did. Did I 16 it? No. But 17 else did. On the last day of the session, the professor asked me to stand. She 18me, telling that the class that she was very proud of me.

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had 1 most of the night before, laughing and 2 with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my 3 was dropping down to my desk to make my textbook a 4. A few minutes' nap (小睡) time before class wouldn't hurt, I thought.

BOOM! I 5 my eyes and looked around with my heart beating wildly trying to find the 6 of the noise. My young professor was looking at me with a 7 on his face. He had dropped his textbooks onto the teacher's desk 8. “Good morning!” he said, still smiling. “I am glad to see everyone is 9. Now let's get started.”

For the next hour I wasn't 10 at all. It wasn't from the shock of my professor's textbook alarm clock. It was 11 from the interesting discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material 12. His words were full of both wisdom and loving-kindness. When the class was over, I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little 13 and a little better as well.

I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well and do it with joy. What a wonderful world it would be 14 every teacher, doctor, cook, businessman, farmer and worker made their work an expression of their love. Don't sleepwalk through your life then. 15 up! Let your love fill your work. Life is too short not to live it well.

Worth the pain in the end

I used to hate running. It seemed too hard and pushing outside my comfort zone was not something I was raised to do.

In fact, I wouldn't have become a1if it weren't for my husband Charles. He had been a serious competitive runner for many years. After our marriage, he wouldn't stop talking about how much he missed it.

"So start running again, why don't you?" I was getting 2 of hearing about it.

So he picked it up again, and after about a year, I started to join him at the track (跑道). Just a few weeks later, Charles signed us both up for a five-kilometer race. I 3about doing it. It was too soon.

But on 4 day, there I was.

The gun went  5. Thousands of runners pushed forward.

    The first kilometer was 6.

"I don't think I'm going to make it." I was already breathing heavily and painfully aware of the group of runners  7 past me.

"No, you're doing 8", said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something other than my  9.

    "I can't, " I said, 10 audibly (听得见地).

He tried a different way to 11 me. "Just make it to that house and let's see how you feel."

After another minute I saw the three-kilometer  12. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing (折磨) me.

Miserable doesn't even begin to describe  13 I felt. And there was so much 14.

"You'll be fine. You've got less than a kilometer to go."

I rounded a corner and saw both sides of the street thick with people watching the race, all cheering the runners on. I 15 my legs to keep going.

Then I looked up and saw the clock. The seconds ticking away (一分一秒地过去) gave me an incentive (助力). I knew that if I finished this race, I would have achieved something. So, I straightened up, and kicked it.

I had my arms held higher when I passed 16the finish line. A volunteer put a 17 around my neck.

"You did great! I'm so 18 of you!" Charles was thrilled that I'd 19 it.

"That was AMAZING! I want to do another race. This running stuff is amazing!" I proudly hugged my medal as we started to walk to the post-race festivities.

My lungs and my comfort zone both 20.

Do birds have a favorite color? It's probably not a question you've ever 1 but a project designed to answer that question led to two British schoolboys 2 the Young Scientist Award of the year after presenting their 3 to a group of judges.

The boys' 4 to find out whether birds have a(n) 5 for a particular color came purely from scientific curiosity. Both of them are very 6 about nature and the power of colors in things, 7 they worked as a perfect combination and 8 a citizen science project that didn't require fancy equipment.

The boys 9 bird feeders in their back gardens. Each garden had five feeders, colored blue, green, red, yellow and transparent. They made sure to change the position of the feeders regularly, 10 it affected the results and then placed a 11 for an hour each morning, afternoon and evening across all four seasons to 12 birds visiting each feeder. They collected 13 covering a total period of 400 hours.

When the experiment finished, they had recorded the birds' 14 to the gardens added up to 3,205, with over a third being to the 15 feeders. It was a conclusive win for blue. The pair believe that blue is 16 to birds because of its familiarity, while red and yellow are often 17 of poison in nature.

Later, the boys considered 18 for their findings, such as using the less popular colors of red and yellow to 19 bird strikes on planes. There seems to be quite a strong connection between the 20 of planes and the number of bird strikes.
