    What to Do When Someone Doesn't Like You

    When someone tells me, “I don't care if people like me,” they are showing me the emotional wall they use to block the hurt of rejection.

    As humans are social animals, all of us care if people like us. Based on the need for social connection, your reactions to rejection and negative judgment can range from minor hurt to breakouts of depression. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The first step to handle a negative situation is to recognize your reaction. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling?”. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Any betrayal (背叛) or embarrassments in your heart? Identify what feeling has shown up in your body? So you can choose what to do next.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}When you sense yourself shutting down or feeling defensive, ask yourself what the person actually meant to do to you. Did they truly mean to offend you, or make fun of you? Your brain works very hard to keep you safe, so it will judge a situation as threatening if there is any possibility of social harm.

    When our brains sense a possible threat, we react as if we were personally attacked. Take a breath to relieve the stress, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Finally, if you believe the person doesn't like you, ask yourself if this matters. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}If not, what can you do to release your need to be liked by this person? And, what can you do to stay neutral and not return the dislike? Dealing with Difficult Relationships

    Everyone has at least one awkward or tense relationship. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It may be with somebody who will use up your energy whenever you are with them. Or worse, it could be someone who always cuts you down. By persuading you it's your obligation or duty, you forget about your own needs. Sadly, by remaining loyal to these people, you forget who you are. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} No matter who they are, it's necessary that you learn to set boundaries (界限) for yourself. It is you who allow them to take advantage of you or even belittle you.

    If you find a relationship unhealthy and it's time for you to set boundaries, the following advice may be helpful.

    Setting boundaries for difficult relationships starts by admitting how you are affected by the relationships. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} For example, it's time to study for tomorrow's test. But your friend wants to take you to a party. Here, setting boundaries will help protect your academic goals. Someone who pressures you to something you're not comfortable doing will stress you out. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Next, decide how much time you should spend with these people. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} But it's difficult to help others if you forget to protect your own priority (优先次序).

    Settling boundaries requires taking a long, honest look at yourself. By saying no to harmful patterns in relationships, you say “yes” to a healthier you.

A. Does this kind of relationship lower your self-respect?

B. These people may be your family members or even friends.

C. It's easy to spend too much time and energy offering them help.

D. People may try to keep you in an unhealthy relationship.

    To someone stuck in a traffic jam, the ability to fly right over other cars seems like a dream. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} That may be changing. Nearly a dozen companies around the globe are competing to be the first to develop a flying car. One of the ideas being developed is a car with wings that unfold for flight. But, most aren't cars at all. They are more like helicopters and are operated by a battery-powered motor.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Companies have to convince the government that the flying cars are safe. They will also need longer-lasting batteries. And, cities will have to figure out how to handle thousands of flying cars in the sky.

    Still, some companies are moving forward. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Especially as cities grow more crowded and people spend more time stuck in traffic. These taxis would deliver passengers to the rooftops of office buildings during rush hours.

    "In as little as 10 years, products could be on the market that revolutionize urban travel for millions of people," said Zach Lovering. He is the leader of a project to develop a self-flying taxi for Airbus, a European company that makes airplanes. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Although Uber doesn't have any plans to develop a flying car itself, the company is advising several companies that are developing them.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Designers think that if enough people want to buy them, prices can be kept affordable.

A. Some flying cars are designed for human pilots.

B. It's still unclear how much flying cars will cost.

C. They see a need for "air taxis" and personally owned flying cars.

D. Companies will also have to get permission from the government.

E. The Uber ride-share company sees air taxis as the future of on-call transportation.

F. Inventors and business people tried to make flying cars, but have never been able to.

G. There are many challenges that could keep flying cars from becoming part of everyday life.
