One of the many great lines in the movie Apollo 13 came from Ed Harris, who played NASA Director of Operations, Gene Kranz. The famous line was, “Gentleman, failure is not an option.” He said the words because he had a clear purpose that the three astronauts trapped in space must be sent home safely. The driving force behind their seeking of a solution was motivated by a true purpose.

Here is the simple principle. If you have a big enough 'why' in life, you will always figure out the 'how.' A person without a purpose in life is like a boat without a rudder, floating aimlessly without a direction and going nowhere. In all walks of life, when referring to someone's success, we often hear the words “focus and determination”. But Merriam Webster defines the word “purpose” as the reason why something is done, a feeling of being determined to achieve an outcome. There are many talented and intelligent people in the world that are unsuccessful because they lack direction. I believe that our life depends on our purpose. Whether you're single or in a team, having a purpose allows you to start, evaluate, and improve your talents or abilities helps you find your path in life and achieve your success finally.

A friend of mine once told me that the most motivating speech he had ever heard was just three short words. It came from his wife when she said, “Honey I'm pregnant.” He said those few words instantly motivated him because he now had a big “why” in his life, a purpose to work hard to support his family. In fact, when your “why” gets bigger, you get better because you stop holding back and you'll go all out. It's why you often hear about some great people perform superhuman actions when failure is not an option!

    (1) What does the underlined word “rudder” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A . Something that gets the boat started B . Something that makes the boat float C . The reason for which the boat is built D . Something that directs the boat to a certain place.
    (2) What is the most important thing for success according to Merriam Webster?
    A . Talent B . Purpose C . Determination D . Intelligence
    (3) The author gives his friend's example to show________.
A . why words can motivate people easily B . that family love is very important in our daily life C . that a purpose can make people try their best D . how people can get success more easily
    (4) What does the author mainly tell us in this passage?
A . To be successful person B . To have a big “Why” in life C . To make a right choice D . To get rid of failure

The story of the movie Inside Out mostly takes place inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley as she moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. The main characters are Riley's emotions—Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger and Fear, which guide her decisions and often compete with one another for control of her brain.

Fear is tall, thin, looks like a frayed(焦燥的)nerve and is purple. Not only that, his eyes are purple, too. Anger, which is red, looks like a brick and has red eyes. Disgust, who is green, has green eyes. Sadness, not surprisingly, is completely blue, and even looks like a teardrop. But Joy, who is mainly yellow, has more than one color in her. She has blue eyes and blue hair. Why? Well, if blue represents sadness, then the message is clear: there is no such ting as “pure joy”. Instead, even in our most joyous times, there is often sadness mixed in.

After all, one of the most joyous moments we can experience is a wedding, but it may end with the breaking of a glass. It reminds us that our world is still broken. In order words, even at our highest moments, there is always a little sadness.

But the comfort is that the reverse is often true. Think about how you feel after crying. When you cry, your body is releasing some chemicals that often make you feel good. And that's why you feel at ease after a good cry.

Indeed, Inside Out reminds us that even the emotions that appear “negative' have value. In other words, Inside Out shows us that the goal of life isn't “to be happy”. We will feel sad, angry or frightened. But we need our whole range of emotions for developing our sense of self and our relationship with others.

    (1) According to the author, Joy is different in appearance because __________.
A . it is the leading character in our life B . that shows it is joyful for a reason C . that shows it doesn't just mean pure joy D . the director wants to make it prettier
    (2) Why does a wedding end with the braking of a glass?
A . To remind the new couple not to overjoy B . To show the world we live in isn't perfect C . To remind the new couple to pay attention to happiness D . To show the new couple about the real meaning of marriage
    (3) The underlined part “the reverse is often true” in Paragraph 4 means ____________.
A . sadness is as important as joy B . happiness doesn't last very long C . sadness can sometimes lead us to joy D . we should never be too happy about something
    (4) The movie Inside Out is meant to tell us that ___________.
A . we should attempt to be as happy as possible B . we should control our negative emotions C . developing our sense of self isn't that easy D . we need both positive and negative emotions

                                                                                     Is There Life on Earth

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan(named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago). Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to the feasibility(可行性)of a manned flying saucer(飞碟)landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week's satellite landing,” Pro. Zog said, “that there is no life on the Earth.”

“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

“For on thing, Earth's surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”

“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”

“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means heavier flying saucer than we originally planned.”

“Are there any other risks that you discovered in your studies?”

“Take a look at his photo. You see this dark black cloud floating over the surface of Earth?” We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don't know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”

“If what you say is true, won't this set back the flying saucer program several years?”

“Yes, but we shall proceed as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”

“Pro. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?

“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then. We can live anywhere.”

    (1) The Venusians were excited this week because they __________.
A . landed a satellite with Venus astronauts on Earth B . made a first-rate flying saucer C . got an Earth Being to Venus D . directed a satellite into Earth
    (2) According to Pro. Zong, why will the Venusians have to take their own oxygen with them?
A . Because they need it on their way to the planet of Earth B . Because the Earth's atmosphere is filled with deadly gases C . Because deadly gases is far from enough on Earth D . Because there is no air on the planet of Earth
    (3) The “dark black cloud” in the photograph refers to _________.
A . the polluted air floating over the surface of Earth B . the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth C . the concrete that is unknown to everywhere D . the dark clouds gathering before a storm breaks
    (4) What's the purpose of the writer?
A . to arouse the awareness of protecting the earth B . to introduce a Venusians' science program C . to tell us the serious pollution of the Venus D . to tell us an exciting Venusians' exploration
