You always found me on a basketball court or with a ball in my hand. It taught me many things about life. It also taught me that success requires hard work.
I played the sport up until one day my plans were cut short. I had my knee broken unfortunately, terminating my career as a player. Giving up basketball was one of the hardest things I've done in my life.
I did not want to lose that part of my life forever. I decided to realize my dream of basketball from a different angle; I signed up to coach a seventh grade basketball team. I'm not going to lie, at first I was a bit apprehensive. After all, I was only a senior girl in high school coaching a seventh grade basketball team.
My basketball team consisted of seven seventh grade girls and we practiced twice a week for one hour. It was not a lot of time, which often made it difficult to make progress in skill development. However, my skills were able to develop, but not in basketball. As a coach, I am supposed to be the one teaching them. But the girls that I coached did not realize that while they were learning, so was I. My players taught me many things like patience and confidence, and above all, a better understanding of myself as a person. They taught me how to be a good role model, and how to hold myself accountable for my choices. They taught me how to heighten my love for the game, and heighten my love for seven girls I didn't know I could grow so close to. Thank you for helping me grow as an individual and as a coach.
Newly published Federal Trade Commission data shows that consumers reported losing more than $5.8 billion to scams (欺诈) in 2021, an increase of more than 70 percent over the previous year.
Of the losses reported by consumers, more than $2.3 billion of losses reported were due to imposter (假冒者) scams—up from $1.2 billion in 2020, while online shopping accounted for about $392 million in reported losses from consumers—up from $246 million in 2020. Prizes, internet services and job chances followed closely behind.
The FTC's Consumer Sentinel Network (Sentinel ) is a database that receives reports directly from consumers, as well as from federal, state, and local law enforcement(执行) agencies, industry members, and non-profit organizations. It received more than 5.7 million reports in 2021; these include the scam reports detailed above, as well as identity theft reports and complaints related to other consumer problems, such as problems with banks and lenders. These reports are a key resource for FTC studies that stop illegal activities and, when possible, provide aids to consumers.
The FTC uses the reports it receives through Sentinel as the starting point for many of its law enforcement studies, and the agency also shares these reports with approximately 2, 800 federal, state, local, and international law enforcement professionals.
The Federal Trade Commission works to promote competition and protect and educate consumers. The FTC will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize. Learn more about consumer topics at consumer.ftc.gov, or report scams, and bad business practices at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Follow the FTC on social media, read consumer warnings and the business blog, and sign up to get the latest FTC news and warnings.
Visitors post photos and videos of themselves getting close to flamingos at several resorts (旅游胜地) in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on social media. The pink, leggy birds wander the grounds, walking through artificial ponds and eating food dropped by tourists.
"But behind the fantastic social media posts, things are less rosy for the flamingos," says Fernandez, a Dominican conservationist and photographer.
Some of these flamings have their secondary feathers cut, which prohibits flight. Others have a bone removed from their wings. This grounds the bird for life, which can be up to 60 years.
Fernandez has also witnessed flamingos being given much pet food, which eventually fades the pink color that comes from eating their native diet of shrimp and other small crustaceans. The birds change behaviorally as well, becoming used to people and asking them for food, as Fernandez has seen.
On the other side of the country, Monte Cristi National Park is the natural habitat for Caribbean flamings; it's also a popular trapping site. And it is here that Paulino works to remove the traps, which are made of wooden sticks attached to fishing wires.
Paulino's group first noticed the traps in 2009 and has been reporting them to the authorities ever since, but the practice hasn't stopped. Once, Paulino says, she spotted a trapper carrying nine flamingos in a bag. On a trip early in 2023, the group took 706 traps from three locations.
This method of trapping harms, or even kills the birds, which Paulino has seen firsthand in the field. Flamingos are walking around and all of a sudden their leg falls in the wires and when they pull, they're caught. They are trapped by the knee or the ankle, and struggle to break free, which exhausts them.
Doing housework can improve memory, increase your ability to concentrate, and give you strength to protect you from falls.
That's the hot topic from the BMJ Open, which recently published the findings of a study in which researchers from Singapore explored the relationship between housework and health. However, this was one of the first studies to test the relationship between housework and cognitive (认知的) function.
To test out their theory researchers enlisted 249 adults between the ages of 21 and 64. First, all the participants completed questionnaires asking how much housework they did, and how often they did it. The cognitive test measured how quickly individuals could recall a memory and how long their attention lasted. The physical function test mainly involved their strength to avoid falls.
The team found that the more housework they did, the better the adults scored on both cognitive and physical tests. And, light housework was linked to a 12 percent higher score on memory recall. In addition, housework reduced sit-to-stand time and improved the strength of older adults.
For one thing, cleaning house—much as you might find it a boring thing—is more mentally inspiring than watching TV. If you're painting the walls a different color, for example, you're training your motor skills, coordination(协调), concentration, and memory.
So what's the takeaway? Stop putting off that big house project! Accomplish three things—mental activity, physical activity, and housework—for the price of one.
A. Is Doing housework really good for your health? B. Why might housework improve mental and physical health? C. Then two tests were conducted to evaluate participants' performance. D. Daily housework can also change depending on your individual needs. E. In fact, heavy housework was linked to a 14 percent higher attention score. F. It also improves blood flow to the brain and increases oxygen levels in the body. G. Previous studies have shown exercise can improve persons' memory and attention. |
