Picture the scene: It's midnight. You're very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Should you eat it? It seems that you shouldn't for many reasons, because it may be bad for your brains.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us put on weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating may also be bad for our brains—it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
"We believe that late-night eating may affect our learning by affecting (影响) the parts of the brain that control learning and memory," Dawn Loh. PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said. "We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the bad memory."
For the study, the researchers did an experiment (实验) on mice. The mice were either allowed to eat during the daytime or during the night. They had the same amount of sleep and food. Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice and noticed that the mice eating during the night were less able to remember things well.
So think twice before the midnight snack—it might be bad for more than your weight.
When I got to know that I would play for a drama (戏剧) competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, I was excited about what was to come. The story was great and the sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a go. I was playing Sir Toby Belch, a very funny old knight (骑士). I had to remember a lot of sentences and very funny old words. I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
"OK. It's time to be a different me now!" I said to myself. At first, I couldn't do anything naturally. I didn't know what to do when acting in this silly way. But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was. Even when I was bathing. I was thinking about Sir Toby's words and actions and trying to do everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform, I took a deep breath and began my part. I tried hard to make my words clear enough to be understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody really happy. When the final scores were finally read out, I immediately knew we had won the first prize. I made it.
From this unforgettable experience, I've come to know that I can be a different person. It doesn't mean I've changed my personality (性格), but I can do something I had never imagined possible.

Mr Sun once shared his experience online. He met a man nearly every day on the underground. The man was always watching TV shows on his mobile phone without using headphones (耳机). So he decided to teach the man a lesson by copying him. After quietly telling his plan to the man, he played a song over and over again till the man shouted at him and left.
This kind of thing will not happen on the underground in Shanghai because of a new rule (规定). The rule says all passengers (乘客) must not use speakers on their mobile phones. That is, if they want to watch TV shows or listen to music, they need to use headphones. If they don't, workers at the underground station will stop them, or even hand them over to the police officer.
Many people in Shanghai say the rule protects the rights (权利) of other people on the underground and creates a better environment. "Playing music or videos through speakers can be disturbing to others," they say. "Many people need to have some peace and quiet before or after work. "
People from other cities love the rule too. "It's faster for me to go to work by underground, but I choose to get up early and drive the car," a man in Hangzhou says. "I just can't stand the man-made noise on it. I hope we can have the same rule soon. "
Though the underground is open to everybody, there is still personal space for the passengers. Creating a better underground environment needs not only rules, but also everyone's self-discipline (自律).
