A caterpillar(毛毛虫) that eats plastic bags could hold the key to solving plastic pollution, scientists say. Researchers at Cambridge University have discovered that the caterpillar which eats beeswax(蜂蜡), can also degrade(降解) plastic.

Experiments show the insect can break down the chemical bonds(键) of plastic in a similar way to absorb beeswax. Each year, about 80 million tons of the plastic are produced around the world. The plastic is used to make shopping bags, food packaging, one-off raincoat and other things, but it can take hundreds of years to degrade completely.

However, caterpillars can make holes in a plastic bag in under an hour. "The caterpillar will be the starting point. We need to understand the details under which this process operates. We hope to provide the technical solution to cutting down the problem of plastic waste," the scientist said. And the scientists who discovered it want to speed up the process of discovering the chemical secrets behind the natural degradation of plastic. They think something in the caterpillar—as well as the insect itself—might play a role in breaking down plastic.

If the chemical process can be found out, it could lead to a solution to managing plastic waste in the environment. "We are planning to use this finding in a practical way to get rid of plastic waste, working towards a solution to saving our oceans and rivers," said the scientist. "However, we should not feel good to dump plastic on purpose in our environment just because we now know how to degrade it."

In the past ten years, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed.

A main feature of social media is its volatility(易变). Trends(流行)come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appear. So, what were the main social media trends of 2018?

Short video apps, such as Tik Tok and Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that Tik Tok was the 8th on Apple's App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million active users in June in China, CNBC said.

The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another main feature. Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was very excited when anyone said that her video had "encouraged" them. "It's really cool because I think as social creators that's what we all are," she added.

Live streaming(直播)is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It's a pretty good idea—you can watch anyone, anywhere, live.

China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. More than 100 million Chinese people monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of reasons had led to the popularity of live streams. One of the most important reasons is that people don't have to know their real names.

Although we use social media all the time, that doesn't mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should pay attention to both the time we spend on it and its influence on our minds.

    (1) What were the main social media trends of 2018?
    (2) How many active users did Douyin have in China in June?
    (3) How did Liza Koshy feel when her videos helped others?
    (4) How many social media's features are mentioned in the passage?
    (5) What don't people have to know about each other while watching live streaming videos?
