A caterpillar(毛毛虫) that eats plastic bags could hold the key to solving plastic pollution, scientists say. Researchers at Cambridge University have discovered that the caterpillar which eats beeswax(蜂蜡), can also degrade(降解) plastic.
Experiments show the insect can break down the chemical bonds(键) of plastic in a similar way to absorb beeswax. Each year, about 80 million tons of the plastic are produced around the world. The plastic is used to make shopping bags, food packaging, one-off raincoat and other things, but it can take hundreds of years to degrade completely.
However, caterpillars can make holes in a plastic bag in under an hour. "The caterpillar will be the starting point. We need to understand the details under which this process operates. We hope to provide the technical solution to cutting down the problem of plastic waste," the scientist said. And the scientists who discovered it want to speed up the process of discovering the chemical secrets behind the natural degradation of plastic. They think something in the caterpillar—as well as the insect itself—might play a role in breaking down plastic.
If the chemical process can be found out, it could lead to a solution to managing plastic waste in the environment. "We are planning to use this finding in a practical way to get rid of plastic waste, working towards a solution to saving our oceans and rivers," said the scientist. "However, we should not feel good to dump plastic on purpose in our environment just because we now know how to degrade it."
Sending packets, shopping for everyday goods and even building a house, these are new skills that new robots show at the World Robot Exhibition.
RoBohoN |
Scientists are recommending the latest talking robots. They can be highly intelligent in their responses. RoBohoN, just 10cm tall, makes a lively description of the Great Wall and the Palace Museum. It can speak Chinese, English or any other language you like. |
Human Support |
This robot stands at 1m tall and looks like a container with arms. It provides much support to different places and keeps in touch with the outside world through the internet. |
HRP-5P |
As world cities continue developing, there are building sites everywhere, but there aren't enough people to build them. HRP-5P looks like a strong builder. It stands at 1.8m tall and |
CarriRo |
CarriRo, in the shape of a toy bus, has friendly "eyes" on its front. It works as a postman and sends packages by rolling around the streets. It has a GPS to travel. The person who receives the package is sent a code to the smart phone to open the CarriRo and get the package. |
There are some skills for students to listen to the teachers in class, which means you're going to have to practice them. Just as you would have to practice basketball to be a better player, you also have to practice listening. How to listen in school? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
One of the things you'll need to do is to make sure that your mind doesn't wander(漫游). It's easy to start thinking about other things, especially when you are not interested in the subject. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}
Next, listen for the main ideas. If you want to catch every little piece of information, you'll feel tired and bored. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Not only does this show respect to the teacher, it also helps prevent your mind from wandering. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Or it could just be someone talking to their neighbors who shouldn't be, it can even be some birds outside the classroom window, or a group of kids who are talking loudly as they pass the door to your room.
Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You'll have to take down the notes so that you can study it after class. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}
Listening isn't always easy, but if you follow these simple steps, you'll be much more successful in your classes.
A. Here are some suggestions. B. You'll also need to look at the teacher. C. Taking notes also makes you pay attention to the class. D. It might be a friend who is trying to pass you a note. E. So make yourself pay attention to what the teacher is saying. |
