One day, at the end of the class, a wise teacher told each of her students to bring a plastic bag and a bag of potatoes to school.

The next day, she 1 her students, "Starting from today; for every person you don't like in your lives, you can choose a potato, write down the person's name and the date on it, and then put it in the plastic bag."

Day after day, some of the students' bags became very 2. They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere they went for a week. They should put it inside their quilts at night, on the seats when sitting in a car or on a bus and next to their desks at school. The days carrying the bag around with them made the students get to know 3 a weight they were carrying in their minds. One evening, I went out for a walk on the path(小路) near my house with my husband. On my finger was a very special ring with a diamond(钻石) that my grandmother gave me for my 23rd birthday. At the end of the path, when I looked down at it again and found the diamond was 1. I started back along the path hurriedly 2 the tiny stone, In my heart, I knew it seemed impossible for me to find it. The path was very long and covered with leaves. As I searched the ground, crying and 3 , I met an old lady. "What's the matter, love?" She asked 4. I explained about the missing diamond and showed her my ring. She said, "That's going to be hard to find. Tell me what the diamond looks like, love. I walk along this path every day and I'll keep my 5 open for it." I thanked her, 6 nothing, but still told her that we sometimes walked our dog along the path if she might find something.

A few days later, my husband and I met the old lady on the path. "Guess what?" She said, "I found your diamond!" To our surprise, she'd found the tiny stone and was willing to hand it back to me. "It was 7 that I found it." When we provided her with some money for her help, she 8 politely. I was deeply moved. She could have easily kept the diamond, or sold it, for it's worth several thousand dollars, 9 she didn't.

Every time I look at my ring and 10 myself that there are kind and beautiful hearts in the world. I'll spend the rest of my life trying to do something like that.

There are about 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs(瓢虫) in the world. They come in many different colors. Their bright colors warn other animals or insects not to eat them. Ladybugs taste bad. A bird or a frog that eats a ladybug will remember the bright colors and it will not eat another ladybug with the same colors again. When ladybugs are in danger, they will give out a fluid(液体) that tastes terrible. In many cultures, the ladybug is considered to be a symbol of good luck.

Most ladybugs are kind to humans. They eat other insects which destroy crops. One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 insects in its lifetime.

Ladybugs have six short legs. They live in many different places, including green lands, forests, cities, the countryside and along rivers. Different ladybugs have different spot(点).

Some of them don't have spots at all. The most common kind in North America is the 7-spotted ladybug. The 7-spotted ladybugs are the most active from spring to autumn. When the weather turns cold, they will look for a warm place to sleep, such as under stones or in houses.

One of my best friends went abroad to enjoy her holidays, so the job of looking after her dog Missy has been given to me. A few months ago, Missy came to my friend' s house. She looked terrible. She had been abused for a long time.

When we first visited my friend and Missy, my friend had to gently pull her over on a lead(牵绳) to get her to come to us. She wanted to come but afraid to do so — the poor, beautiful thing.

Clearly Missy came to the right home. My friend has given birth to a baby of her own and shows the love of a mother.

This is just what Missy needs. Thanks to the love of my friend, she has changed into a new dog step by step. Sadly, she is still afraid of strange humans. I hate to imagine what the dog must have gone through.

Now, Missy trusts me completely, so I can touch her belly. While standing, she will jump up so gently to be closer to me, putting her paws(爪子) on my legs as she looks at me with those beautiful eyes.

Missy is really brave. She has the courage to try again, to open her hearts, and to know that not everyone is the same kind of people as before. Keep it in mind that tomorrow is another day.

For a long time, a boy wondered why his friend was always the first in the class, whereas he could only rank the 21st. At home, he asked his mom, "Am I more stupid than other kids? How can I always fall behind? I just can't come up with an answer." His mom was aware that her son's selfrespect(自尊心) had been hurt by the ranking system, but she didn't know what to say to help him.

She tended to say that intelligence was different and that her son's friend was really smarter. But that would upset her son.

The boy and his friend went to high school that year, but no matter how hard he tried, his friend still outdid him. But the boy's mom was proud of him for his hard work. It was around this time that she decided to take him on a trip to the seaside. During the trip, she at last found an answer for him.

Today, the boy no longer cares about the ranking. He doesn't have to, for he himself is now the top of the class — at the top national university. When invited to speak in his old high school, he mentioned a valuable childhood experience, "Once, during a trip to the seaside, my mother and I were lying on the beach. She pointed to the sea and said to me, 'Do you see the seabirds fighting for food out there? When a wave comes near, the little birds rise quickly. The clumsy(笨拙的) seagulls are far slower and have to struggle to get away from the wave. But these clumsy seagulls have the biggest, strongest wings, which allow them to travel the farthest. When the season changes, they leave for foreign shores, leaving the little birds behind. Son, I have a feeling that you are one of those seagulls.'"

My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body was. When I was young, I thought  was very important to us humans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy." She said, "No. Many people are deaf. You can keep  about it, and I will ask you again.

Several years , and she asked me again. This time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to  so I'm sure it must be our eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct, because there are many people who are ."

Over the years, mom asked me some more times and her answer was, "No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child."

Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was crying. My mom looked at me when it was our turn to say goodbye to Grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?"

I was shocked when she asked me. I always thought it was a game between her and me. She said, "This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived  life." I saw her eyes were filled with tears. She said, "My dear, the most important body part is your ."

I asked, "Is it because it holds up our head?" She replied, "No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one  he cries. Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends. Then you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."

Mr. and Mrs. Albino, with 64 children, have the world's largest family. Not one of their children is adopted(领养).

When people hear about the Albinos' large family, the first question they ask is, "How is it possible? How can one woman give birth to 64 children in her lifetime?" The answer is simple:

Soon after the Albinos got married, the children came quickly, in twos and threes. The first 21 children were boys. Mrs. Albino loved her sons, but she wanted a daughter very much.

The Albinos spent the early years in Argentina.  To travel from Argentina to Chile, they had to cross the Andes Mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Albino and their 21 sons made the difficult, two-week journey on mules.

During the snowstorm, Mrs. Albino gave birth to triplets, a boy and two girls!

The oldest Albino children are in their thirties and forties. They are on their own now, but 18 of the Albino children still live with their parents.  The shack has electricity but no toilet or running water. The children wash in a small bowl in the dusty backyard.

At times there is very little food in the Albinos' small house when there is not enough food for everyone, Mrs. Albino makes sure the youngest children do not go hungry. "The smallest eat first, and then the bigger ones. We've always done it that way," she says. Obviously, the Albinos do not have enough money for their big family, then, do they continue to have children?

The Albinos do not use birth control because it is against their religion(宗教). They could let other people take care of their children, but Mrs. Albino will not allow it, "When my two brothers and I were babies," she says, "our mother left us at an orphanage(孤儿院) and never returned. We lived there together until we were five. Then a couple adopted my brothers and I was left behind. I was heartbroken. Even if I didn't have much money, I would always take care of my children by myself." Mrs. Albino has kept her promise.

Travel sets us thinking and makes us in discussions of big world problems. If our thinking skills drop, they will have to wait until we're done traveling. What follows is how we travel.

Cheap Travel

The less you spend, the closer you come to the reason you came.

We try to spend less in traveling, although we have money to stay in middle-priced hotels and eat in their restaurants if we cut back on the length(长度) of our trips. By spending less we can travel longer and travel better. We meet more locals by using buses rather than taxis and by staying in small family-run hotels and eating in local-style coffee shops. Spending too much money can't help you to know more about the foreign experience you came to have.

Travelers—Not tourists

What is the difference? Travelers are more likely to get deeper into the life of a country than tourists. The way to do this is to do lots of reading before trips about the countries we will visit, and try to learn a few words of local languages.

Independent travel is usually far less expensive than packaged tours. We don't use travel agents because we don't

stay in hotels that charge(费用) high, and we can get cheaper tickets on the Internet. We like finding out where to eat and working out how to get around. This puts us into direct touch with the local people. Independent travel isn't as comfortable or convenient, but it' s the most meaningful way to travel.

Moving around

Although it is not comfortable and convenient, we take public transportation whenever possible. Traveling in a car is easier, but also scarier. In much of the world roads are poor and driving behaviors are not fixed. Luckily, even the less developed countries often have good public transportation system: riding buses and trains brings us into closer touch with the local people.

Carrying things

Backpacks work better for long-term travel than the wheeled luggage(轮式行李) most middle-aged travelers use. Using the luggage is fine with a car, but backpacks are easier for bus and train travel. Best of all, wearing backpacks bridges the gaps(缩小差距) between age groups一allowing elder travelers like us to make friends with young travelers.
