A farmer had a donkey. One day it fell into a deep dry well. The poor animal cried for hours. The farmer tried hard to pull it out but1. Finally, he decided the animal was too old, so it just wasn't worth it to try to 2it. So he invited his neighbors to help him bury (埋葬) the old donkey in the well so that it would make him end its pain.
They each took a shovel (铲子) and began to cover the3with dirt. Realizing what was happening, the donkey felt upset and cried sadly and loudly. But as more dirt fell into the well, slowly it became 4. The farmer looked down into the well, and was 5 by what he saw. When the dirt hit its6, the donkey shook it off and took a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer's neighbors continued to put dirt on top of the animal, it would shake it off and7a step up. Soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and 8quickly. Everyone was amazed and shocked. It seemed that it would bury it at first, but it actually helped it9later.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to get out of the well is to stop 10, and not to let the dirt cover you, but to shake it off and take a step up. Each one of our troubles in life is a stepping stone. We can deal with difficulties just by not stopping, never giving up!

"With one more world championship, I can apply for the Guinness World Records (吉尼斯世界纪录), "said Chen Yongning, a 93-year old ping pong lover in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, Red Star News reported on April 2nd, 2019. With 80 years of experience and a racket that he bought from a stationery shop for 15 yuan, Chen won World Veteran Championships in 2016 and 2018.
"I'm not tired. I play with my hands and arms, and my feet don't move," said Chen after playing ping pong for 40 minutes with a younger player Ye. "Chen is physically strong. He can usually play several games with us," said Ye, explaining that Chen is energetic, though he is troubled by backache.
Chen started to play ping pong when he was 13 years old. While he was playing with friends in his school playground, the headmaster saw Chen very carefully follow the rules of a game he was playing, while the other children tried to play tricks on each other. The headmaster called him over, gave him a ball and rackets, and asked Chen to play with him. Chen didn't know how to play ping pong at that time, so he just followed the headmaster's lead. Ever since that moment, Chen said, he had fallen in love with it.
As he grew up, Chen worked in Shanxi Agricultural College (now Shanxi Agricultural University), where there were excellent ping pong facilities. He sharpened his skills and took part in various competitions in his spare time, winning a number of local medals.
Chen has a son and a daughter. Both of them love their father and are successful in their own fields. One of them will go with Chen to the 20th World Veteran Championships which will be held in France next year.
Chen has already decided he won't stop playing ping pong unless he is 100 years old.
⑴David: Every time I answer the phone, people always mistake me for my mother or sister. I am tired of it. ⑵Anna: My parents always leave my little brother and me at home while they are at work. I feel scared and sad. ⑶Misty: My cat died in a car accident. He was one of my best friends and we always played with each other. Now I feel very lonely. ⑷Alyssa: I worry about my math test. I often forget everything I've remembered during the test ⑸Justin: My teacher always picks on(挑刺) me in class, she usually gives me lower grades though I have the same answer as others. |
A. Everyone gets worried sometimes. Take a deep breath while taking a test. It usually helps a lot. You should practice more so that you can work out different kinds of math problems. B. Make a plan to use your money. Don't spend too much in shopping online. You can do some jobs in your free time to make some money, too. Stop asking your parents for it. C. You should call and say sorry to your best friend. Fight cannot solve any problems. Try to have a talk with him, and find out a right way to get on with each other. D. Think about everything carefully. Have you done anything wrong? If not, have a talk with your teacher. I am sure you will get on well with each other soon. E. You must be sad! Write down your feelings about your cat on your diary so that you won't feel lonely. Spend more time with your friends and family. Everything will be OK. F. Don't worry too much about it. When you are 14 or 15, your voice will get lower and people won't mistake you again. G. Being alone at home might be interesting, too. Play games with your brother or do something you like. You will find it funny to stay at home. |
One Saturday afternoon, my daughter Alice asked me, "Are all people the same even they are different in color?" I thought for a minute and then I said, "I'll explain to you if we can make quick stop at the grocery store. I have something interesting to show you." At the grocery store, we some apples: red, green and yellow ones. Back home, I told Alice, "It's time to answer your question." I put one apple of each kind on the table. Then I looked at Alice, who had a strange look on her .
People are like apples. They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. Some of the apples may not even look like the others. As I was talking, Alice was examining each one . Then, I took each of the apples and peeled with a knife, placing them back on the table, but in a different place. "Okay, Alice, tell me which is which." She said, "That's . They all look the same now." "Take a bite of each one and taste. See if that you decide which one is which." Smile came across her face, "People are just like apples! They are all different, but once you take the outside, they're pretty much the same on the ."
She totally got it. I didn't need to say or do anything else.
President Xi Jinping hosted the opening ceremony of the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge( HZMB) in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province on October 23rd. The 55-kilometer Y-shaped bridge in the Lingdingyang waters is the world's longest sea-spanning(跨海的) bridge. It connects Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao.
