One day after school, Bill walked past the shop on the street corner as usual. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt sorry for himself.

    He really wanted to have a new pair for his birthday. He sadly walked away and

    thought of how to tell his mother. He knew she would give him anything if she could. But he also knew she had little money. He decided not to go home at once, because he looked worried and he didn't want his mother to worry about him. So he went to the park and sat on the grass. Then he saw a girl in a wheelchair. He found that the girl moved the wheels with her hands. Bill looked at her carefully and was surprised to see that the girl had no feet.

    He looked down at his own feet. "It was much better to be without shoes than without feet," he thought. It was not right for him to feel so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was luckier in life.

    Mr. Lee was in bed and was trying to go to sleep when he heard the bell ring. He turned on the light and looked at his clock. It was twelve o'clock. "Who can it be at this time of night?" He thought. He decided to go and find out. So he got of bed, put on his dressing gown (浴袍) and went to the door. When he opened the door, there was nobody there. "That is very strange." Then he went back to his bedroom, took off his dressing gown, got back into bed ,turned off the light and tried to go to sleep.

    A few minutes later he heard the bell again. Mr. Lee jumped out of bed very quickly and rushed to the door. He opened it, but again he found no one there. He closed the door and tried not to feel angry. Then he saw a piece of paper on the floor. He picked it up. There were some words on it : "It is now after midnight(午夜), so it is April Fool's Day (愚人节). April fool to you!"

    "Oh, it was the English boy next door!" Mr. Lee exclaimed (惊叫) and almost smiled. He went back to bed and feel asleep at once. The bell did not ring again.

    A man went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. He ordered the most expensive dishes. The waiter served the meal. He ate it with great joy. Then a small boy came in and sat at his table.

    The waiter came up and said to the man, "What would your little boy like, sir?"

    "Oh, just an ice cream," the man told him. Then he stood up and said to the waiter, "I'm just going out to buy a newspaper."

    He left the restaurant. The waiter gave the boy an ice cream. The boy took it and then stood up and walked to the door. The waiter ran towards him.

    "Excuse me," he said, "But your father hasn't come back and he hasn't paid for his meal or for your ice cream."

    "He's not my father," the boy said. "I don't know him at all."

    The waiter was puzzled. "What do you mean?" he asked.

    "The man came up to me in the street," the boy said, "He asked me if I liked an ice cream. I told him I did. Then he told me to come into the restaurant at 2 o'clock and sat down at his table. He said he'd give me one."

    Big Ben is not the name of a man. It is the name of a huge(庞大的)clock in London. London is the capital of England. This clock has four faces. So，no matter where you stand, you can read the time on the face of Big Ben. Each face is the size of a double decker(层)bus. The hands are about four metres long. It is about the size of two people standing on top of each other. If you go to London, you may want to visit the Houses of Parliament(国会大厦). There you will find Big Ben sits at the top of the clock tower(塔)in the Houses of Parliament. Maybe you will hear it as well as see it. The huge clock makes such a loud noise. "Ding dong, ding dong, "it goes every quarter of an hour.

    The clock was named after a big man. He was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man did much building work in London many years ago.

The best study tips to help you pass exams

    Cramming(突击式学习) doesn't work. If you start to study for weeks ahead, you will have plenty of time to read everything. It also gives you enough time to ask questions about anything you don't fully understand.

    How many pages in total do you have to study? How much time? If you have 50 pages to cover in 10 weeks, then that is only 1 page a night on weekdays, with weekends off. That's not so bad! You can even write down what to study in that night.

    When you start early enough, you can easily avoid the stress and anxiety of polling an all-nighter. And, you can move at a steadier pace—20 minutes a night is easier to handle than 7 hours the night before. By the week before the exam you'll have read everything at least once and you'll be prepared!

    Look at the chapter or unit or section. What are the titles, headings and subheadings? Are there any bold words? Write these down. These are key words, and they are great indicators to help you know what the material is about.

    The secret to easy studying is to be an active learner in class. Raise your hand. Ask questions. Participate in discussions. Don't just sit and wait for the teacher to teach you, get involved in learning!

Tell mommy I love her

    John had been on the road visiting customers for more than three weeks. It was coming up on Mother's Day. He said to himself, "I'll 1 Mom some roses."

    He went into the small shop and saw a boy 2 to the clerk. "How many roses can I get for six dollars, ma'am?" the boy asked. The clerk was trying to 3 that roses were expensive. 4 the young man would be happy with carnations (康乃馨).

    "No. I 5 have roses," he said, "My Mom was sick so much last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something 6. It has to red roses, because that's her favorite."

    Every weekend, I took my children to the park. I think it's a good way of them to meet other child and make friends. They love play on the swings, so they are always very exciting when we go to the park. They also like playing hide-and-seek with my little friends.
