As a kid, your parents made decisions about everything from the food you ate in the morning to the pajama (睡衣) you wore at night. This is a good thing—kids need this because they are too 1 to live by themselves.
But sooner or later, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is 2 a new you—one that is different from your parents'. This change may make your parents feel 3.
They aren't prepared for the new you yet—they still 4 you as the kid who knew nothing. In most families, this change can also cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. You want to cover your walls with pop-star pictures; they don't understand 5 you don't like your children's wallpaper anymore. You think it's OK to 6 at the shopping mall every day after school, they hope that you play a sport.
It can take several years for parents and teens to 7 their new roles. And sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don't understand you and never will. But talking and sharing your 8 can help you get more understanding from your parents; and you may be able to get the 9 that everyone is happy about. For example, if you clean you room in order to stay out an hour later, both you and your parents will walk away with a good 10.
Keep in mind that your parents were teens once and they can relate to what you're going through.
A couple of young men were fishing at a lake. Suddenly the policeman jumped out of the forest.
At once, one of the men threw his rod (鱼竿) down and started running through the forest, and the policeman ran after him.
After about half a mile, the man stopped and stooped (弯腰) over his hands on his legs to catch his breath. The policeman finally caught up to him, "Let me see your fishing license (证件), Boy!" the policeman said.
The man pulled out his wallet and gave the policeman a fishing license.
"Well, guy." said the policeman, "You must be about stupid as a box of rocks! You don't have to run from me if you have a fishing license."
"Yes, Sir", replied the young man, "But my friend back there, well, doesn't have one."
Have you ever been to places with nobody living there? You can find ghost towns (废城) all over the world. Here are a few famous ones.
Gold was first found in Bodie in 1859. 15 years later, it had become a busy town and had a population of about 10,000. But when all the resource (资源) went, so did the people. It became Bodie State Historic Park in 1962 and is kept as a kind of museum.
Hashima is a ghost island near Japan. In 1887, people found coal (煤) there, so buildings, hospitals, libraries and schools were built. However, in 1974, the coal ran out and the people left. In 2009, a small part of Hashima was reopened for tourism.
Craco was built in the 8thcentury in southern Italy. But many earthquakes(地震) happened there every year, so the people had to move to a near town in 1963. Craw has become a town _____________ since then. Nowadays, the only way to step in it is by taking a guided tour.
Pripyat was developed quickly in the 1970s. There were schools, sports halls and an amusement park. But it became a ghost town after a nuclear reactor explosion (核反应堆爆炸)on 26thApril, 1986. In 36 hours, all the people left the town. According to scientists, because of the nuclear accident, it will take about 20,000 years before it is open for humans.
A series of Chinese landscapes (风景) created by an AI (人工智能) robot, named Gemini, is shown in London.
It was believed to be the first AI-made ink work. Ink Now Chairman Calvin Hui sees it as the start of the tech ink times.
It took Victor Wong, the Hong Kong artist, around three years to build and program Gemini. He has been interested in traditional art since he was young. "Few younger people nowadays care about ink, so I decided to bring technology and ink art together." says the artist, "I want to tell them that ink painting is not that hard to do."
Each landscape painting can take around 60 hours to finish. First, the robot artist creates his own landscape in his AI mind. Then he's traveling inside his mind and picking up an angle (角度) because it's 3D. After that he uses an arm that puts the brush into ink and water before sweeping across Xuan paper to create Chinese Shuimo artwork.
However, in some people's opinion, whether robots can create ink art like human artists is not sure because the ink lines were too, straight while works created by human hands are better. "I'm open to all comments," he said, "I'm keeping an open mind as to whether machine-made art can be seen as art. But I hope it will bring an imagination to artists on how to mix technology while painting or creating.
①sweep across Xuan paper ②put the brush into ink and water
③create his landscape ④pick up an angle
Earth's atmosphere (大气) is made of the layers of air that is around Earth. Thanks to the O2 found in the atmosphere, humans and other animals can breathe.
The atmosphere has four layers. The closest layer to Earth is the troposphere. The troposphere reaches from Earth to about 8 to 15 kilometers above sea level (平面).
It includes most of the air and O2 in the atmosphere, so all life on Earth lives here. The closer to the ground, the warmer the air is. Higher up in the troposphere, the air becomes much colder.
The second layer of the atmosphere is the stratosphere. The stratosphere reaches to around 50 kilometers above Earth. Near the top of the stratosphere is the ozone layer (臭氧层). The ozone layer helps protect life on Earth from the sun's UV radiation. Unluckily, there are holes in several parts of the ozone layer. This could cause serious problems for life on Earth.
The third layer of the atmosphere is the mesosphere. It reaches up to around 80 kilometers above Earth. The mesosphere has the coldest temperature in the atmosphere. It can be as cold as -100℃ there.
The fourth layer is called the thermosphere. It reaches up to around 600 kilometers above Earth. This is where outer space begins. The international space station runs around the planet from this layer. The temperature here is very high. It gets up to 1, 200℃.
A ratio compares two numbers. For example, if you have 3 pens and 4 pencils, the ratio of pens to pencils is 3 to 4. 3 to 4, 3:4 and 3/4. One type of ratio is expressing (表示) numbers as a percent. A percent is the ratio of a number to 100. In other words, a percent compares one number to 100. The percent means "per hundred". You can use "%" to express percent. So 35% means 35 out of 100, and 15% means 15 out of 100. Probability means the chance (可能) of some things happening in the future. For example, if there is a 90% chance of rain, 90 times out of 100, it will rain. That is a very high probability. However, if the weatherman says that there is only a 10% chance of rain, then 10 times out of 100, it will rain.
You can also express probability by using ratios. 5 of them are black while only 1 of them is red. If you choose a pen at random (随机地) from the pencil box, then the probability of choosing a black Den are 5 to 6, or 5/6. On the other hand, the probability of choosing a red pen is only 1 to 6, or 1/6.
A. So, 60 percent of something means 60 out of 100. B. For example, perhaps you have 6 pens that all look alike in your pencil box. C. The ratio can be written in three ways. D. That is a very low probability. E. Percents are helpful when expressing the probability. |
Everyone knows that animals are our friends. I think it is good that many families keep animals pets. Unluckily, some people do not care for their pets. Some do not feed their pets enough so they easily become . Others do not give their pets a proper place to sleep. There are also people who actually /hɜːt/ their pets. I feel this is wrong. People should not treat (对待) their pets so (bad).
The government of the United Kingdom is thinking of ways to help /prə'tekt/ pets--it's about rule! It's making some rules about to take care of different kinds of animals. What's more, the rules would even /ɪk'spleɪn/ ways to keep animals happy! They will make sure all the pets can live a good life. That is some news for pets, don't you think?
The UK also wants to have special "pet police". They can go to (people) homes to check that they are caring for their pets properly, or they can take animals away.
I hope more people will now try to take (good) care of their pets than before. We should always keep in mind that animals are our friends and they should be loved the way they love us.
