We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn't even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. Then, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.” The nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren't you working late?”
Mum just pushed harder, each swipe of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book. After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining.
She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.”
Outside, Mum told me, “Grandma is fine. No fever.”
“You saw her, Mum?”
“Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It's a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is not good. You need a brush.”
The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang(团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of. And it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.
February 14th is Valentine's Day! In China, it is only a day for boyfriends and girlfriends. But my teacher and my friends in America told me that Valentine's Day is a public day.
This was my first Valentine's Day in America. I didn't understand the customs clearly. Maybe I didn't need to send any gifts. I watched others to see what they did, so next time I can understand.
On that day, when we began the reading class, Mr. Peters gave every student some chocolates and said, “Happy Valentine's Day!” I was very happy. The teacher gave his students gifts and blessings! I never saw that in China. Maybe American teachers are very different. I didn't buy a gift for the teacher, so I owed a gift to the teacher. Anyway, I want to say, “Thank you teacher, and I'm sorry.”
When we had a break, one of my classmates gave me a Pokemon card. It was very funny. I felt we were children. I thought I owed a gift again, but I felt thankful. It was another gift, but it was from my new classmate.
When we were moving to our grammar class, suddenly I heard someone calling me, “Shelly!” I stopped. Another classmate who had only been in our class one day gave me some chocolates. She said, “These for you and your friends. Have a good day!” I was looking at her leaving and thinking she spoke Arabic. We were in the same class only one day, but now we are friends. That's very good, but I owed a gift again.
When I came home, my Chinese friend sent some roses and chocolates. I was surprised and happy because I had never received roses in my past life, but I hoped it was the last gift. I didn't want to owe more gifts.
Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!
I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class, especially during lectures.
Taking notes is important. You don't need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the board, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.
In this way, it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.
Don't skip school. You will be missing some knowledge. However, you will have more work. Also, try not to be late for class. It's most likely that your teacher won't appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.
If you have an “I don't care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems or offer you extra credit(学分). The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students. Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.
Always ask questions. If you don't understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, seek help. Ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc. Get a tutor(家教) if you need one.
A. Be prepared.
B. Write in your own words.
C. Pay attention to everything the teacher says.
D. Staying organized will be helpful.
E. There is no shame in needing some help.
F. It is true that you could make up the work.
G. Keep a good attitude towards things.
It happened when I was in Grade 4. My teacher Ms. Orange asked us to bring cards, candy and other 1to class. She wanted us to celebrate Thanksgiving Day as a class. I 2this activity and thought it would be fun, 3I asked my mom to help me make some nice cookies. I 4bought some Thanksgiving cards. I couldn't wait to give them to my classmates.
When the day finally5, things went very well. People gave each other cards and candy. Everyone seemed very6. I gave out all of the things I took to school to my classmates. However, I received7. I was surprised at what was happening. Ms. Orange then asked us to8 what we received and say whom it came9. When my name was called, I couldn't hold back my10because I didn't get anything from anyone. I was 11 by the people who said that they were my 12.
It was surely a 13Thanksgiving Day for me. I was angry. But I didn't want to 14 my classmates. I kept being kind to them and 15hard. And what I did paid off. I became one of the 16 students in my class. My teachers and classmates were proud of me. Now I have many good friends by my side. The_17from them alone will always be the best gift I will value forever. I 18that the best gifts in life don't come from stores. It's the things that we value in our 19that count. I'm glad that I made the right decision and 20 my classmates' friendship in the end.

One day, I happened to find a chatting room on my QQ, there people were chatting with English. I try to chat with some of them. To my surprised, I found the oral English of some junior students was better than mine. I asked them for advices and they told me to practise more on QQ. But every day after that, I would spend one hour practise my oral English on QQ. Day by day I learned from many useful words and expressions. With time went by, I found that I could even communicate some college students freely.
