Growing up in the mountainous Sierra de Penamayor, in Asturias, northen Spain, Aladino Montes had been shooting deer ever since he was a child, but his life as a hunter came to an abrupt end 10 years ago, when he met Bambi, an adorable deer that has remained by his side ever since. Aladino has never shot an animal since.

53-year-old Aladino recalls driving through the mountains in his little jeep, ten years ago, when he saw a couple of cows being followed by a skinny little deer. Deer don't usually hang out with cows, so he approached the animals for a closer look. That's when he noticed that the deer had several wounds and would have probably died without proper medical care. He put the injured animal in his car and drove back to his house when he nursed it back to health. But instead of running back towards the forests, the deer stayed by Aladino's side. They've been best friends ever since.

He always loved animals, but his father had taught him to hunt deer as a child. He did it for food, not sports, but ever since he adopted Bambi, he hasn't shot a single animal.

Aladino's cabin sits at 1,140 meters above sea level, offering tourists a beautiful view of the surrounding mountainside. On clear days, one can see all of central Asturias all the way to Gijon, but most people don't travel to Les Praeres for the view, they come to see Bambi, the friendly deer.

Sometimes, Bambi will elk straight into the bar in search of Aladino and leave everyone with their mouth open, or even let people pet her. But she's always most comfortable at the side of her rescuer. She's so relaxed around him that she makes other deer feel safe as well.

    (1) What does the underlined word “abrupt” in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A . Quick. B . Happy. C . Sudden. D . Slow.
    (2) What made Aladino give up hunting?
    A . The kind cows. B . His kind-hearted nature. C . The deer's bad conditions. D . His rescue of the wounded deer.
    (3) What do you know about the little deer Bambi now?
A . It is a tourist attraction. B . It is doing nothing. C . It is a symbol of friendship. D . It is living under the natural state.
    (4) What does the deer Bambi like to do best?
A . Go to the bar. B . Stay around Aladino. C . Let people pet her. D . Attract other deer to some near.

Gardening is a very popular hobby. And it is one that produces wonderful results – food for your dinner table and flowers for your home! Gardens themselves can be very beautiful. So you would think that a garden path is a great place to be. Well, in conversation, it is not. Leading someone up the garden path means you are trying to trick them. You are not trying to show them your beautiful flowers.

Speaking of beautiful flowers, gardeners love to see small buds (芽) forming on their plants. Besides plants and flowers, people can bud, too. If a child is good at drawing and painting, we can call him a budding artist. So “budding” describes something that is beginning to develop.

On the opposite end, you stop something from growing if you nip it in the bud. This is a common expression when we talk about stopping something bad and preventing it from continuing. It's good to nip small problems in the bud before they turn into big problems.

Now flowers that bloom (开花)are beautiful to see – even garden-variety flowers. “Garden-variety” describes anything that is common and not so special. You can have a garden-variety cold—not a serious illness.

Now, a problem that many gardeners have is weeds. Weeds grow easily and can quickly take over a garden. In conversation, we sometimes use “weeds” to mean too many details. So, if you are in the weeds, you are taken over by too many details.

As we said, weeds grow quickly. So do children. So, we like to say a child grows like a weed. This expression compares a child's fast growth to that of a weed.

    (1) What do you mean to do if you lead a man up the garden path?
    A . Cheat him. B . Act as a guide. C . Teach him to work. D . Show him your garden.
    (2) What should you do if you find your little brother smoking?
A . Treat it as a garden-variety matter. B . Lead him up the garden path. C . Encourage him to smoke. D . Nip it in the bud.
    (3) In which situation may you be made busy and bored?
A . You meet a garden-variety problem. B . You are budding in your career. C . You are in the weeds. D . You grow like a weed.
    (4) How does a mother feel if someone says her child grows like a weed?
    A . Angry. B . Proud. C . Discouraged. D . Overjoyed.

Webber is a labor economist. His latest research offers guidance on how to keep students on target to earn a degree from a college or university. Among his findings: It is important, whenever possible, for college students to complete their degree program in four years. Also, getting a part-time job is probably a good thing to help finance a college education. But too much time spent working on a job makes it less likely the student will graduate.

One thing, Webber said, is financial aid that helps many students pay for college. Scholarships and other assistance generally stop after four years. So the cost of each additional year in school is likely to come almost entirely from the student and/or parents.

But there are other reasons why taking more than four years is a problem, as Webber notes. It's because life gets in the way, other things happen. He means the longer you stay in college, the more likely that some unexpected event will affect your studies. It could be a loved one getting sick, a parent losing a job, or the student running out of money for college.

Only about four in 10 graduated within four years. It is also important that students have enough time to complete their college classes, Webber added. His research suggests part-time work of 15 hours or less will not cause harm to the student's scholastic performance. But his research shows students who work 20 hours or more a week are about 15 percent less likely to graduate on time, or to graduate at all.

His belief is that students active in college athletic programs would face the same problem. It is common, he said, for student athletes to spend 20 hours or more for training, travel and to compete against athletes or teams from other schools.

    (1) What is the disadvantage if your college education lasts too long?
A . You have to work longer to pay the fee. B . You'll have a heavier economic burden. C . No one will support you with money. D . The cost will be too high to afford.
    (2) Which matches Webberr's opinion about college education?
A . No pains, no gains. B . Every coin has two sides. C . A long delay may cause trouble. D . Where there is a will, there is a way.
    (3) To graduate from college on time, Webber suggested ________.
A . devoting enough time to studies B . earning enough money to pay C . gaining rich work experience D . giving up part-time work
    (4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A . Complete Your College, the Sooner the Better. B . It Is No Mistake to Study Part-time at College. C . Study Is More Important Than Part-time Jobs. D . Key to Success, Finishing College in 4 Years.
