"Can I see my baby?" the happy new mother asked. When the baby was lying in her arms and she moved the cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped(吃力地喘着气). The doctor turned quickly and looked out of the hospital window. The baby had been born without ears. Luckily, time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect. Though the misfortune(不幸)happened to him, he grew into a handsome boy. Yet he felt ashamed when he communicated with others.
"You should get in touch with other young people," his mother told him, with a kindness in her heart. The boy's father talked with the family doctor about his ears. "Could nothing be done?"the father asked. "I believe I could give him a pair of outer ears, if they could be got," the doctor replied.
Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, "You are going to the hospital, Son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need, but it's a secret."The operation is a big success. Later he married and entered the diplomatic(外交的) service. One day, he asked his father, "Who gave the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her."
"You could, my son," said the father, "but the agreement was that you are not to know…not yet."
The years kept their secret, but one of the darkest days did come. He stood with his father over his mother's casket(棺材). Slowly, the father stretched forth(伸出) a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.
"Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut," his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they?"

The 2024 Summer Olympics are coming. While waiting for the event to begin, we can learn something about it.

The organizers have promised to bring less harm to the environment by minimizing the number of newly-created buildings. In Paris, 95 percent of places used for the games are already there or will be put in place for a short period.

In one of the latest developments, the organizers said that a total of 11,000 seats in two gyms, Arena Porte de la Chapelle in Paris and the Aquatics Center in Saint-Denis, will use recycled plastic chairs.

The decision was made after local manufacturers (制造商) found there weren't enough plastic materials, which forced them to turn to recycled waste.

That was why the organizers began working with Lemon Tri and Le Pav. The two companies (公司) got the idea of getting plastic waste from recycling bins around the city. Over 100 tons of plastic is needed to make the seats and 80 percent of it is collected from local schools and street-side bins in Seine-Saint-Denis, it's also where the plastic waste is processed into new materials.

" When we ask children to put their bottles in the bins and tell them they will become the seats of the Olympic swimming pool, it helps them learn about the importance of recycling waste," said Augustin Jaclin from Lemon Tri.

Of course, collecting plastic is one thing and turning it into Olympic chairs is another. After all, making them isn't as easy as making normal chairs.

     阅读理解

On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence(围栏). It was thirty yards(码) long and three yards high! When he was working, some boys came along and made fun of him.

Ben was the first one who came happily with an apple in his hand.

"I'm going swimming," said Ben. "Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you?"

Tom got a little angry, but soon he had a wonderful idea.

"Work?" he said. "I don't think this is work. It's fun. Does a boy get a chance like this every day?"

Ben thought about this. He was watching Tom's every move and was getting more and more interested.

After a while, he said, "Tom, will you let me do some painting?"

"No way. You see. Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the only one that can do it right."

"Oh, please, Tom," begged(恳求) Ben." I'll be really careful. Let me try! I'll give you my apple in return."

"Well, all right, Ben," said Tom. "But you must be careful."

He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.

All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favorite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles(玻璃球), and so on.

That afternoon, Tom got many toys, and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave Tom a large cake!
