Something unexpected happenedin the summer of my eleventh year. The home I had grown up in burned to the groundin the middle of the night. Thankfully, my mom, dad, grandma, brothers and I escapedalong with my dogs. Yet, we had nothing but the night clothes we were sleeping in.I spent the rest of that night with a friend of my family. I tried unsuccessfullyto sleep in the bed in his house. I was too scared.

    The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirtsand pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too shortand the other pair was too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothesagain. My dad returned to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thinghe could save was my mom's rings.

    To spend the summery dad rented us a big houseon the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and ourcommunity continued todonate (捐赠) all they could to help us to get back on our feet. There were moreclothes, furniture, food money, and even some books for me to read. Love was aroundus.

    Looking back now I am thankful for all we wentthrough that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. Itshowed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see thatlove is enough.

The history of chocolate begins with a plant whose name is cacao (可可豆). For centuries, people worldwide have been enjoying the rich favor of chocolate, a product made from cacao. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Americans eat an average of more than five kilograms of chocolate per person every year. The specialty （特产） shop shows the culture of chocolate and sells chocolates from different areas of the world. 

Historians believe the Mayan people of Central America first learned to farm cacao plants around 2, 000 years ago. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Then they grew them around their homes. They cooked the cacao seeds（种子）and pressed them into soft powder （粉末）. They mixed the powder with water to make a delicious chocolate drink. There are often images of cacao plants on Maya buildings and art objects. The rulers drank chocolate at ceremonies. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

The Aztecs also valued chocolate in the Aztec culture. But the cacao plant could not grow in the area where they lived. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They even used cacao seeds as a form of money to pay or give as offerings（祭品）to the gods. Only the very rich people in Aztec societies could afford to drink chocolate because cacao was so valuable. 

The explorer Christopher Columbus brought cacao seeds to Spain after his trip to Central America in 1502. The rich people of Spain first enjoyed the chocolate drink. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Nowadays, the English, Dutch and French all plant cacao trees in their own countries. 

"It's hard to say this, but I'll have to leave school in a few weeks' time, " said Mr. Thomas, standing at the front of the classroom. 

It was early on Monday morning and Mr. Thomas' students were surprised at the news. All of them loved Mr. Thomas very much and they never thought that he might leave. However, Mr. Thomas reached the age when he was going to retire. After hearing the news, the class kept gloomy for the next few days until the class monitor gave them a small scolding (训斥). 

"We should not be like this, "she said. "Instead, we should study hard to thank Mr. Thomas for being so good to us. " The class agreed, and they thought of an idea of having a farewell (送别) party for Mr. Thomas to surprise him. 

On Mr. Thomas' last day at school, everybody brought a different kind of delicious finger food to class and put it in the middle of the classroom. They covered the blackboard with farewell messages. When Mr. Thomas showed up, all the students said "Goodbye, dear teacher!" together and promised Mr. Thomas that they would do their best in schoolwork in the future. 

Mr. Thomas was really surprised. And he was really touched. The class, in turn, was glad that they did the right thing. After all, it was the simplest way to show thanks to their favorite teacher. 

One day, a young man went to a farm. He lost his job a few days ago, so he was going to 1 a new job there.
