Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world.

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?

My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.

Question 2:    ▲

To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree.

Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?

It's now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate(热情的) about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There's something to photograph everywhere.

As we all know, with the development of technology, smartphones have influenced the old people in our family a lot. A TV programme interviewed three teenagers on how smartphones influence their family.

My grandfather asked me to teach him how to play the popular video game King of Glory(王者荣耀). I was surprised that he was interested in this! He chats with family members on Wechat every day. He tries to learn other new things as well. For example, he watches courses on learning apps. Although he is old, he still cares about technology and sports. So, as we can see, the Internet can help elderly people. —Xing Yuxi, 12, Chongqing

I live in Hangzhou, a city of technology. People enjoy the convenience(便利) brought by the Internet. However, I often worry about the elderly. Take my grandma as an example. On one hand, she would like to get discounts by using mobile phones. On the other hand, she's afraid of getting cheated online. I think it takes time for elderly people to get used to these things. We should help them keep up with the times. — Sun Run, 14, Zhejiang

Smartphones have made a big difference in my grandma's life. In the past, newspaper and TV programs were her only ways to get information. However, it was not good for her eyes, as she has severe cataracts(严重白内障). But now, she can listen to the news through all kinds of apps on her mobile phone. She doesn't have to look at the screen all the time. Sometimes, she even plays mobile games for fun. Thanks to the Internet, my grandma now has a more colorful life.

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

During the National Day holiday, the sky above Shenzhen was lit up by impressive drone(无  人机) light shows. This"cyber fireworks" lit up the night, painting a lively picture of Shenzhen asa"City of Miracles, City of Innovation, City of Future". A total of 10,197DAMODA drones took to the sky at the same time, setting two Guinness World Records. So how does the drone light show work?

Before a drone light show begins, drones are usually put on the ground one by one and it would take a lot of time to prepare a show with more than ten thousand drones. To shorten the time, the DAMODA drone company thought of a solution. The company put groups of drones into big boxes with specific OR codes on it. By putting the boxes into correct places, thousands of drones can be ready in a short time and they can go back to their"homes" by scanning the OR codes.

In drone shows, each drone is programmed by a computer to follow its own flight direction, carefully avoiding the other drones. They communicate with neighbouring drones and use sensors(传感器) to keep a certain distance. The position and LED colours change throughout the performance to show different objects in the night sky.

Drone light shows are thought to be more environmentally friendly - - - and certainly cause less noise and light pollution - - - than fireworks shows, so lots of big events are turning to them instead of fireworks. Drones can also be reused again and again so they will probably be more popular in the future.
