I still remember the day when my first grandchild, Noah, was born in the hospital. The room was full of1 from the family. And we hugged each other in excitement and wished he would grow up healthily like other babies. But things didn't go2 as planned. Noah faced lots of health problems from the very beginning. And doctor told us that he would3 to grow up healthily, which broke our hearts. Noah wasn't able to suck (吮吸) like most babies. He couldn't eat on his own. So doctors had to give him a feeding tube (胃食管) just to keep him4 . It was heartbreaking for us to see him go through so much5 . But we lived positively (every day 6 complained about the unfairness. Because we realized we should7 the things life gives us.

Noah is a special and excellent boy. He has come a long way since those early days. He has faced many8 and achieved so much. Today is his 13% birthday. We held a big party outdoors. Many relatives and friends accepted our invitation,9 this party on time. We were thankful that we10 together when facing difficulties. Family is where life begins and love never ends.

Smart, Social Animals

Recently, researchers have found that dolphins know their own names much like people. Dolphins talk to one another with whistles (口哨) and calls. Scientists have known that the animals also use unusual whistles to name each other. They had thought that dolphins only heard each other's voices. However, the scientists didn't know that dolphins listen for their names too. 

To test this idea, the researchers caught 14 dolphins and recorded their name calls. The scientists then copied each dolphin's voice. When the changed recordings were played, the dolphins replied strongly to the names of their relatives and close group members. They paid no attention to the names of dolphins they did not know. 

Dolphins live in large groups that grow and change. Each dolphin's unusual whistle helps it quickly find a friend or a family member, or call for help. Understanding their calls requires learning. It's a skill that's seen in very few animals, which include humans, elephants and bats. 

Elephants, for example, communicate with sounds. Their sounds can be heard by other elephants miles away. Dolphins, too, communicate with each other by making sounds like this. 

Elephants also communicate by moving their head, feet and trunk. In much the same way, dolphins communicate through their movements. They often touch each other to express friendship. 

Unlike dolphins, elephants also communicate through their great sense of smell. They can recognize other elephants through the smells they have. 

Why do dolphins and elephants share the gift of communication? Scientists think it may be because they are social and smart animals. Both have strong family relationship. Now, whether they also have nicknames is another question! 

My dad bought me a new Jeep when I was 17，but the real gift was what he taught me about life through this car. very month, on the first day, he asked me to pay him $150 if I wanted to continue driving my Jeep. Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight when he was only 14 months old. 

Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks (咔哒声) with sonar (声呐) to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar. He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads. And he started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works. 

"When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect (反射) off surfaces around and return to my ears. My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. Each click is like a camera flash, which helps me make a 3-D picture of my surroundings for hundreds of feet. It's like having a conversation with the environment. "

Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using sonar, although he needs to click twice a sound, much more than he usually does. "It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way, " he says. "But most people in the world live in fear of things that they imagine. I love hiking and mountain-biking. I go almost everywhere. And I've never had an accident and hurt myself. "

He is happy to be able to help more blind children to improve their life. "We've served over 10, 000 students in nearly 40 countries, " he tells the reporter. "Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn't in the eyes. It's in the mind. "

Michael was an 8-year-old student from America. He became ill and had to spend all day in bed at home. He felt sad and bored because other children could not come near him.

There wasn't much to do, so he just looked out of the window. One day, something strange happened outside the window. It was a panda eating a sandwich. The panda said "Good afternoon" to Michael and then left. Michael was very surprised. He tried to find out what was going on. Suddenly, he saw a monkey playing with a ball outside his window. Michael saw more and more strange animals, and he began to laugh and laugh. Everything seemed to be better and better.

Luckily, Michael's health improved. When he felt better, he went back to school. He told his friend Dave about all the strange things outside his window. While Michael was talking, he saw something in Dave's schoolbag. Michael asked what it was and Dave showed him. Inside the bag he found many clothes that looked like animals. Dave wore them to make Michael feel happy while he was ill!

From that day on, Michael always tried his best to make sure that his friends would never feel sad or bored.

Four years ago, l, a 17-year-old girl, arrived at Wellesley College. I cried when my parents dropped me off in my dormitory (宿舍). I thought to myself, "This is what loneliness feels like." Just at that time, I had forgotten how excited I was for college.

Four years has nearly passed, I am now 21 years old, just two months from graduating from college. In four years, I have experienced a lot, happy time, sad moment and ordinary days. How grateful I am for the ones who have shown me the way and taught me to be strong when I felt hopeless. How lucky I am to know that I have a home to return to.

Tomorrow, my mother turns 50. It is because of my mother that l've learned to love myself, to respect myself, and above all, to be a good person. Because of her, I have known that giving up is not and will not ever be a choice.

My mother and I have sometimes clashed head(冲突). She is the strongest person I know, the person who I disagree most. She has told me that I am the only person that is responsible for my life. But today I have to tell her that she has been wrong.

She doesn't realize that there is another person who will never leave me. There's another person who will always there for me and who will love me forever. That person is her. She is the first person I will call when I am sad, in trouble, or feeling blue. She will never lie to me to hurt my feelings.
